INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy men's basketball team (3-0) notched its second straight region win Saturday night, handing Malone a
100-90 loss at Nicoson Hall. Six Greyhounds finished in double figures as the teams combined for 55 personal fouls and 83 free throws.
Â
The last time six Greyhounds scored at least 10 points was back on Nov. 27, 2010. Seven Hounds reached double digits in a 103-79 win against Wilberforce that night, including 14 points from a young
Leland Brown.
Â
Back to the present, Brown stuffed the stat sheet with game highs in points (23) and assists (6) while adding eight rebounds.  It marked the third time he reached his career best of 23 points. Meanwhile, junior
Joe Lawson went for 19 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, and senior
Tyrae Robinson and
Reece Cheatham scored 14.
The multitude of whistles made it hard for either team to find a rhythm earlier, as it took less than 10 minutes for both sides to be in the bonus.
Â
The game featured six ties and nine lead changes in the first half until UIndy scored 11 of the period's final 12 points to take a 44-36 lead at the break.
Â
The Hounds never trailed in the second half, as every time the Pioneers (1-1) gained some momentum, UIndy seemed to answer.  Midway through the second half, Malone crept to within six, but a 6-0 mini-run by the Greyhounds forced a timeout. The surge was capped by
Jared Grady's high-arcing three that hit nothing but net.
Â
Malone never got closer than six the rest of the way. A pair of UIndy slam dunks helped put the game on ice down the stretch; junior
Brennan McElroy's one-handed jam put the home team up 14 with 3:24 to go, while Lawson's two-hander upped the margin to a game-high 16 a minute later.
Â
UIndy has little rest ahead, as the Hounds look to make it four straight when they host Cincinnati-Clermont Tuesday, Nov. 26. Tip time from Nicoson Hall is scheduled for 7 p.m.
