INDIANAPOLIS – In a true team effort Sunday, the No. 1-ranked and host UIndy softball team (53-6) cruised to a 10-0 Mother's Day win versus Ashland (29-20) in the finals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional 1. The Greyhound bats generated 10 runs, while freshman
Morgan Foley pitched a two-hit shutout in the five-inning victory.
The win advances the Greyhounds to next week's Midwest Super Regional versus second-seeded Grand Valley State. Ranked ninth in Division II, GVSU (42-6) won the Midwest Regional 2 after edging GLVC-champ Missouri-St. Louis, 2-1, Sunday.
The Super Regional uses a best-of-three format to determine the Midwest's representative at the NCAA DII Softball Championships later this month. The schedule includes a single game Friday and up to two games Saturday. Site and times will be announced at UIndyAthletics.com when available.
Starting her first career postseason game, Foley gave up a double and threw a wild pitch on her first two deliveries to home plate Sunday, putting a runner at third with nobody out and prompting a visit from UIndy head coach
Melissa Frost-Fisher.
The meeting paid off, as a refocused Foley fanned the next two batters and induced a harmless infield pop to shut the door on what ultimately was the Eagles' best scoring chance of he game.
Foley was nearly unhittable from that point, as the Louisville, Ky., native allowed just two base runners the rest of the way, retiring 15 of the final 17 batters and striking out the side in the fifth and final frame. She finished with 10 Ks to up her record to 27-4 and record her ninth shutout of the season.
Meanwhile, the UIndy offense offered more than enough run support, as an eight-run second inning put the game out of reach early. The offensive outburst was fueled by five base hits, effectively-aggressive base running and two Eagle fielding errors.
Seniors
Kelsey Rummel and
Bailey Wittenauer each recorded a two-run single in the game-changing inning, while Wittenauer also added a second RBI knock in the frame.
After roping a single in the second, sophomore
Casey Williamson found the gap for a two-run triple in the third inning. The two-time GLVC Player of the Year equaled or surpassed three program records Sunday, including tying the single-season marks for runs (60) and RBI (55) while breaking her own school record for hits in a season (82).
Note: UIndy's top-three hitters – Taylor Russell, Rummel and Williamson – combined to go 5-for-9 at the plate with five runs and four RBI.
