UIndy battles IU in 76-63 exhibition loss

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The UIndy men's basketball team battled a hot-shooting Indiana Hoosier squad in exhibition Monday night, falling 76-63 at Assembly Hall.  The Greyhounds led by as much as 11 points early and outscored the Hoosiers by one point in the second half, but in between endured a lengthy scoring drought that proved too much to overcome.

Junior Jordan Loyd matched the game high with 19 points, hitting 4-of-6 from long range.  Senior Joe Lawson added 17 points and eight rebounds, while senior Brennan McElroy had eight points, 12 boards and four steals.

Indiana, meanwhile, shot an even 50 percent from the field in each half, as four Hoosiers finished in double figures, led by Yogi Ferrell with 19.

UIndy got off to a quick start, building a 17-6 lead in the first five minutes.  The Hounds hit seven of their first 10 shots, including a pair of early 3-pointers from Loyd.

The Hounds were tied or in front for the opening 16 minutes, leading by as much as 11 points.  Later, Joe Lawson's two-handed jam made it 28-20 UIndy with 7:37 left in the half, but that would be mark the final bucket of the half for UIndy as the Hoosiers got rolling from that point.

IU shot 60 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes of the opening period, ending the half on a game-changing 22-0 run to take control.

James Blackman's baseline drive and dunk highlighted the surge, giving the home team a 29-28 edge at the 3:53 mark, one they would extend to 14 by the break.

UIndy came out with renewed energy after halftime, however, especially on the glass.  The Hounds out-rebounded the Hoosiers 22-16 in the second half, including grabbing one more offensive board (13) than the Hoosiers did defensively (12).

"One thing that I've never questioned with our guys is their heart," said Head Coach Stan Gouard.  "(Indiana) made shots. Blackmon and Yogi, all those guys made shots and stretched the defense a little bit, but we'll go back and watch the tape and fix some things.  We don't have school tomorrow so we'll have our guys come in at some point to prepare for our next game.  It's a quick turnaround; we play Friday and Saturday night.

"I'm happy with our effort.  I'm a little disappointed in some of the things we did down the stretch, but there were a lot of positives tonight."

UIndy would trim the margin to seven and two occasions in the latter period but would not get closer.  The Hounds combined to shot 12-of-14 from the line in the second half, including five FTs each from Loyd and Dai-Jon Parker.

Freshman Martyce Kimbrough earned 15 minutes of playing time, scoring four points.    Parker finished with eight points, while junior-transfer Salim Gloyd scored five.

The Greyhounds tip off the regular season at the GLIAC/GLVC Challenge in Romeoville, Ill.  UIndy takes on Malone
