Box Score
INDIANAPOLIS – With the score knotted at 73 apiece, senior
Tyrae Robinson knocked down the game-winning lay-up as time expired to send the No. 5 UIndy basketball team (20-2, 12-2 GLVC) to a
75-73 victory against visiting Truman State Thursday night at Nicoson Hall.
The second-place team in the GLVC West, the Bulldogs (17-5, 10-4) had a chance for the last shot in a tie game, but the Greyhounds got the stop they needed. When TSU junior Reed Mells tried to split a screen on his way to the basket, the reigning GLVC-Player of the Week lost the handle and Robinson was credited with the steal.
After a timeout, UIndy had just 2.8 seconds to in-bound the ball from the side and get a look. Robinson more than delivered, as the Gary, Ind., native drove the lane, euro-stepped past a defender and finished in traffic just before the buzzer sounded.
The final score not only upped the Greyhounds' winning streak to eight, but also ensured the program's third straight 20-win season. UIndy had never before had three straight 20-win campaigns.
Earlier in the second half, the Greyhounds saw a 12-point lead disappear when the Bulldogs ran off 15 unanswered points to take their first lead of the game with 13 minutes to go.
The Truman advantage climbed to seven at the 6:46 mark, but the Hounds quickly clawed their way back, starting with back-to-back 3-pointers from senior
Reece Cheatham. Either team led by more than two for the final five-plus minutes, as five lead changes and two ties occurred down the stretch.
A total of five Greyhounds finished in double figures, with Robinson, Cheatham and
Joe Lawson each scoring a team-high 15 points. Lawson also amassed 13 rebounds to notch his fourth double-double of the season.
Brennan McElroy chipped in 11 points and
Leland Brown added 10.
UIndy welcomes the Quincy Hawks to Nicoson Hall Saturday. Tip time is scheduled for 3:15 p.m. ET.
