Anderson, strong second half carry Greyhounds past Hawks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The UIndy women's basketball team earned a tough 60-52 victory Saturday afternoon at Rockhurst University, taking advantage of a 19-point performance from Nicole Anderson and an all-around team effort in the final minutes of the game.

Anderson dominated the Hawks in the opening period, scoring 15 of her 19 points on 7-for-10 shooting.

After a season-low shooting performance in Thursday's loss at William Jewell, the Greyhounds (6-7, 3-2 GLVC) bounced back to shoot 48 percent as a squad in the opening period Saturday.

On the other end, the Greyhounds limited the Hawks' offense to start the game, as the hosts hit just one of their first 10 shots.

Rockhurst (7-6, 1-4) slowly settled in, however, and began chipping away at an early deficit and eventually took an 18-17 lead with 6:47 remaining. The two squads swapped leads down the stretch, but the Hawks went into the half with a 29-27 lead after sinking three free throws on a last-second shooting foul.

Despite shooting just 32 percent in the first half, the Hawks managed a slim halftime lead by outscoring UIndy at the free throw line (6 to 1) and by converting 10 UIndy turnovers into eight points.

Rockhurst climbed to its biggest lead at 36-30 four minutes into the second period, but the Hounds responded with an 11-2 run to regain a lead, 41-38, by the midway point.

The final 10 minutes were nip-and-tuck, but the Greyhounds held Rockhurst without a field goal for nearly seven minutes from 8:00 to 1:29 to build a narrow 50-48 lead. After a 30 second timeout from Head Coach Constantin Popa, Anderson sank a jumper to make it a two-possession game and put the Hawks on the ropes.

After missing a three-pointer on their next possession, the Hawks were forced to lengthen the game by fouling. UIndy responded by nailing all eight of its freebies in the final minute to seal the victory, including a 4-for-4 mark by sophomore Victoria Schaefer.

Along with 19 points, Anderson totaled five rebounds, two assists, a block and a steal. The sophomore from Terre Haute, Ind., finished 9-for-15 from the floor.

"Nicole played a really good game," Popa told WICR after the game. "We wanted to look for her inside and we did that well in the first half. Rockhurst did a little better in the second half keeping the ball from her, but that's the way it goes sometimes."

Junior Princess German was large in the second half for the Greyhounds, dropping nine of her 13 points to help secure the win.

"[Princess] is a very good athlete," Popa said following the victory. "We try to take advantage of that athleticism on the offensive end any time we can."

Senior Kelly Walter finished with 11 points and nine rebounds, and fellow senior Carly Lythjohan pulled in a career-high 13 boards.

In the second half the Hounds surrendered just three turnovers, and outrebounded their hosts 20 to 16. They also sank 10 more free throws than the Hawks. For the game, UIndy outpaced RU 38-22 in points in the paint and shot 56 percent on two-point field goals.

"It's good to see how we bounce back," noted Popa, when asked about the team's 30-point loss just two nights ago. "We won this one and they played really hard, I'm very proud of them.

We've got to stay fired up and learn from our mistakes this weekend. We've got to stay healthy, stay focused, and stay aggressive."

UIndy returns to Indianapolis for a four-game homestand, beginning Thursday night against Bellarmine.
