INDIANAPOLIS – A second-half surge from visiting Southern Indiana spelled doom for the UIndy Greyhounds Saturday in a 67-57 loss in Nicoson Hall.
The Screaming Eagles (13-3, 5-1 GLVC) entered the game second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division standings, and needed a final burst to put away a stingy Greyhound team coming off their best offensive outing of the season Thursday night against Bellarmine.
Trailing 48-43 with nine minutes remaining, USI closed the game with a 24-9 run to seal its third consecutive victory in a row over UIndy. The Greyhounds (7-8, 4-3 GLVC) committed 19 fouls in the second half, allowing the Eagles to convert 15 of 22 free throws.
A sluggish offensive start for both teams resulted in a 7-6 USI lead by the first media break. The two squads combined to make one of the first 10 shots taken, and UIndy went a full five minutes without a made field goal.
The visiting Screaming Eagles built up a 17-11 lead when senior
Kelly Walter decided to fill up the scoreboard in a hurry. She scored 10 points in under four minutes, sparking a 12-4 run that gave the Hounds a 21-19 lead. That spurt started what would become a heavily contested back-and-forth for the next 20-plus minutes of game clock.
Eight of UIndy's first nine attempts were from long range, and the Greyhounds ended up with 13 first-half three-point shots. Struggling to penetrate the USI defense, UIndy was outscored 12-0 in the paint.
The second half alone featured six ties and six lead changes, and other than USI's brief three-point lead at the half, neither team led by more than two points until Walter drained a triple at 9:39 to make it 48-43.
That was when the visitors commenced their late push.
A last-minute free throw from Tanner Marcum gave the Eagles their largest lead at 67-57, icing a game that had 14 lead changes throughout. Marcum tied a season-high with 22 points to lead the Eagles.
After settling for long jumpers in the first half, UIndy established itself in the post in the second period, outscoring USI 18-4 in the paint. The Greyhounds also held the Eagles to under 40 percent from the floor.
Two days after setting a career-high with 28 points, junior
Princess German had another stellar outing netting 25 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Her only miss was on a breakaway layup as the final seconds ticked off the clock. Had that shot fallen, German would have tied UIndy's single-game shooting percentage mark set by Samantha Meissel in 2009*.
Walter finished with 18 points, five rebounds and a steal, and sank four three-pointers. Sophomore
Nicole Anderson was limited to two points on 1-for-8 shooting, but led the team with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Freshman
Sarah Costello had four points, three boards, one assist and a pair of steals, while senior
Carly Lythjohan had four rebounds and two assists.
UIndy remains home next week to host McKendree (Jan. 22) and Illinois Springfield (Jan. 24).
