German's 31 not enough to upset No. 1 Lewis

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – A career outing from junior Princess German wasn't enough to complete an upset at No. 1 Lewis Saturday afternoon as the Greyhounds fell 85-73.

German's personal-best 31 points kept the Hounds (9-10, 6-5 GLVC) in contention from wire to wire, but the top-ranked Flyers were not to be derailed from improving to 21-0 overall and 11-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

UIndy stayed within two or three possessions for most of the game, and when freshman Sarah Costello knocked down a free throw to complete an and-one with 6:35 left the Flyers' lead was cut to just  65-63. The host squad avoided upset by closing the game on a 20-10 run to put away the Hounds.

"We played a very good team today," Head Coach Constantin Popa told WICR following the loss. "But we played, and that's the bottom line. We were right there with them the whole time."

As if facing the nation's top team wasn't enough of a challenge, the Greyhounds were hampered further by losing Nicole Anderson and Ashley Montanez each to foul outs with over eight minutes remaining. UIndy's leading scorer Kelly Walter also missed the final 10 minutes after going down with an apparent lower leg injury.

"We don't want to come up on the losing end, but we are making progress and we are fighting through a lot of things," Popa conceded. "We're fighting through injuries and fighting through a lot of adversity right now, but you know what? We're fighting."

UIndy held the nation's leading scoring team scoreless for over three full minutes to start the game, and later held a brief 18-17 lead halfway through the first period.

Lewis' Jamie Johnson – the GLVC's leading scorer – was limited to just one field goal attempt during those opening 10 minutes, but lit it up the rest of the way to finish the half with 13 points and help the Flyers enter the break up 44-36.

The story of the second half was the Hounds' refusal to be easily put away, as they quelled any attempt by Lewis to stretch too far ahead and coast to its 21st victory. UIndy trailed by 12 with 15 minutes remaining, but a three-pointer by German sparked a short 8-0 UIndy run to pull within four.

Again the Flyers made it a double-figure game at 62-51, but a personal 9-1 German run closed the gap to three. Costello's conventional three-point play on the following possession made it 65-63, as close as it had been since the first half.

Lewis shot 50 percent (14-28) in the second half, and went 10-for-13 from the free throw line to help seal the victory.

German finished 8-for-14 from the floor and 12-for-14 from the charity stripe, adding three rebounds, an assist and a block to her 31 points.

"Princess has been really consistent for us," Popa said. "She's really aggressive and that worked today. Hopefully that rubs off on everyone else, especially our younger players."

Costello followed with 12 points, going a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also had three rebounds, one assist and one steal.

UIndy tied Lewis with 30 rebounds, marking just the third time this season the Flyers did not outrebound their opponent. Carly Lythjohan and Anderson each grabbed six boards.

The Greyhounds went a stellar 21 of 23 from the free throw line as a team, good for the best percentage of the season (.913).

"I'm surprised with the way they played," Popa said of his youthful squad. "Well I am, and I'm not, because I know the type of ladies we have on this squad.

"We've got to take the positives and hopefully heal up by next weekend, and try to put together the same performance."

UIndy has a chance to rebound Thursday when Missouri-St. Louis visits Nicoson Hall with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m. ET.
