LIBERTY, Mo. – The fifth-ranked UIndy men's basketball team (12-0, 4-0 GLVC) continued its season-opening win streak with a decisive
92-54 conference win at William Jewell Thursday night. All 10 active players scored for the Greyhounds, with
Joe Lawson and
Salim Gloyd tying for the game high at 18 points.
Â
UIndy raced out an early lead and did not look back. The Hounds scored the game's first 14 points and did miss a shot until nearly five minutes into play. They racked up 37 points before the Cardinals (5-7, 1-3) hit double digits and went on to build a 28-point lead by halftime.
Â
Jewell was limited to just 6 of 28 (.214) shooting in the first half, digging a hole that proved too deep to escape. UIndy head coach
Stan Gouard particularly liked his team's defensive effort.
Â
"My message from day one has been defensive," said Gouard. "We're going to miss some shots, we're going the turn it over, we're going to fumble some balls, but if we defend, we can win. That's the first thing I put on the board tonight, in fact.
Â
"We're guarding right now, and if we can keep doing that, I love what we can do with this basketball team."
Â
Though the host Cardinals doubled their shooting percentage in the second half, the Greyhounds continued to pull away. Gloyd nailed three triples after the break on the way to a season-high 18 points.
Â
Freshmen
Nik Maric and
Jabree Bond-Flournoy each hit a 3-pointer late in the game, with Bond-Flournoy's jumper good for his first collegiate bucket.
Â
The Greyhounds' driving force, however, was junior Lucas Baker. The Australian point guard amassed 11 points, 11 assists and six rebounds, good for his third double-double of the season.
Â
"He's playing great for us,' said Gouard when asked about Barker contribution. "He makes us go. He's a great passer as you can see, but he also grabbed six rebounds tonight. That's really good for a point guard.
Â
"He does so many good things, and what he brings to this basketball team puts us in the situation where we are right now. We're just fortunate that he's on our roster."
Â
Senior Brennan McElory had another all-around performance, compiling 16 points, seven boards, four assists and four steals. Senior Kendal Vieke knocked down three triples, including back-to-back treys to end the first half, on the way to nine points. Senior
Dai-Jon Parker also added nine points to go with five rebounds.
Â
UIndy makes the short 30-minute drive to Rockhurst University for a Saturday match-up with the Hawks. Tip time is scheduled for 4:14 p.m. ET.
