TIFFIN, Ohio – Late-game heroics from seniors
Jordan Loyd and
Joe Retic helped the UIndy men's basketball win their first game at the Tiffin Thanksgiving Tournament, 75-72 over Seton Hill.
Down 72-71 with just over one minute remaining, Retic nailed a jumper that marked the 10th and final lead change of the second period. After a couple empty possessions, Seton Hill had the ball with only 25 seconds left and looked poised to take the final shot of regulation, still trailing 73-72.
Loyd spoiled those plans, however, poking the ball out of Trevor Blondin's hands and diving to recover it before calling a timeout. Forced to foul, the Griffins (0-4) put Retic on the line and the 6-3 guard delivered a pair of free throws to ice the victory.
"Joe (Retic) hit a big shot down the stretch," Head Coach
Stan Gouard said, following the win. "(Retic and Loyd) came up big for us on both ends."
Loyd finished with his second double-double in a UIndy uniform, scoring 13 on 5 for 9 shooting while pulling in 11 rebounds. He also added five assists and three steals in 34 minutes of turnover-free action.
UIndy (3-2) was led in scoring by sophomore
Eric Davidson, who hit a career-high seven 3-pointers on 11 tries.
"Unbelievable," Gouard said, regarding Davidson's performance. "Our guys are doing a great job finding him in transition."
Seton Hill took early control following the opening tip. The Griffins built their biggest lead at 18-11 when Noah Davis laid in a basket with 10:39 left.
But the Greyhounds answered with an impressive 15-2 run. Part of that run included a pair of 3-pointers from Davidson, both of which came off assists from Loyd.
UIndy used that run to take a 34-31 lead into the halftime break, as nine different Hounds scored in the first period.
Just minutes into the second half Davidson landed another quick flurry, sinking a trio of 3-pointers within 70 seconds to give the Greyhounds a 55-49 lead with 12:29 on the clock.
The Griffins hung tough despite Davidson's long distance shooting, however, and rallied to take a 61-60 lead with 7:51 remaining.
"We've got to do a better job building and sustaining a lead," Gouard told WICR. "We had two chances tonight to stretch the lead, and we stayed on that same number. (Seton Hill) started coming back and we started panicking down the stretch."
As the final buzzer drew near the two sides went back and forth, totaling four ties and 10 lead changes until Retic's jumper with 1:08 left that made it 73-72.
Retic scored 8 of his 13 in the second half, and finished the game with four rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block.
Perhaps the most uncharacteristic facet of the Greyhound win was their subpar 7 for 15 (.467) finish at the free throw line. UIndy entered the game as the GLVC's leading foul shooting team with an 81.2 percent mark, but set season lows for makes, attempts and percentage in Friday's victory.
"We've got to do a better job getting to the free throw line," Gouard noted. "We're a team that usually shoots 28, 30 free throws, so we've got to be better about getting to the line tomorrow."
The Greyhounds did shoot over 44 percent (12-27) from 3-point range, holding their counterparts to just 4 for 14 to finish with a +24 differential in long balls.'
UIndy awaits the result of tonight's match between host Tiffin and West Virginia State, and will meet the winner tomorrow (Saturday) at 3:15 p.m.
