INDIANAPOLIS – On the strength of a blistering start and an all-around scoring contribution, the UIndy men's basketball squad defeated the visiting Lewis Flyers 84-70 Saturday in Nicoson Hall.
The Greyhounds (6-2, 2-0 GLVC) are riding a five-game win streak and are now off to a perfect start in the ultra-competitive Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Saturday's double-digit win over the Flyers (6-2, 1-1) started with a barrage of 3-pointers from the Crimson and Grey. UIndy leapt out to an 11-3 run behind a trio of threes that forced a quick timeout from Lewis' Scott Trost, but the deficit would only grow for his Flyer squad the remainder of the half.
The Hounds sank a remarkable 11 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes – one shy of their season-high mark – and at one point led by as many as 28.
UIndy went into the halftime break up 51-27, having shot 19 of 32 (.593) from the floor and recording 12 assists to just four turnovers. Perhaps most notable was the fact the Hounds' leading scorer
Jordan Loyd played only three first-half minutes, due to early foul trouble. The rest of the Hounds filled the scoring role, as 10 different players got on the board.
The Flyers fought back immediately out of the intermission, using an 11-2 run to cut into the UIndy lead, and continued to draw nearer until a Max Strus layup with 4:26 remaining made it a single-digit game again at 69-60.
Three separate times down the stretch Lewis got within nine, but each ensuing UIndy possession the Hounds answered to keep the Flyers out of striking distance.
After a bucket from Lewis' Miles Simelton with 3:22 left, UIndy's lead was again cut down to 73-64. But sophomore
Eric Davidson sank a 3-pointer in transition for the Hounds, and on the very next possession Loyd hit a long three to effectively seal the win.
Senior
Joe Retic had a stellar game for the Greyhounds, finishing with 17 points, eight assists and five boards while shooting 6 of 10.
Davidson matched Retic with 17 points, sinking all six of his free throws and three 3-pointers.
Alex Etherington recorded 15 points, and Loyd finished up with 11 on a perfect 3-for-3 from long range.
UIndy finished 15 of 30 from deep, as seven separate Hounds contributed at least one deep ball. The Greyhounds finished over 50 percent (28-55) from the field and had 18 assists to only nine turnovers.
The Flyers were smothered offensively much of the night, going only 1 of 14 from 3-point range and committing 16 turnovers.
Strus – the conference's leading scorer – was held in check the entire game from the floor, going 3 for 11 overall for a season-low 18 points. He did most of his damage with 11 freebies in 14 tries.
UIndy is off until next Saturday, Dec. 12, when it plays host to NAIA school Olivet Nazarene. Tip-off from Nicoson Hall starts at 1 p.m. ET.
