Last-second jumper dooms Hounds, 69-67

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Southern Indiana sophomore Bobo Drummond nailed a turnaround 15-footer with 0.8 seconds remaining to upset the sixth-ranked UIndy men's basketball team, 69-67, Thursday night.  The visiting Greyhounds (21-3, 13-3 GLVC) shot an uncharacteristic 60 percent from the line and 29 percent from the arc to snap a four-game winning streak.

Trailing by one with a minute and a half to go, UIndy tied it up when Lucas Barker sank one of two free throw attempts.  The Hounds' defense got a stop on the ensuing USI possession, but a UIndy turnover gave the ball right back to the home team.

With the shot clock now turned off, the Screaming Eagles (18-6, 11-5) looked for the final shot.  Drummond got the call, as the 5-10 guard dribbled to the foul line, spun to the left and pulled up for the game-winning jumper.

Too little time remained for the Hounds as USI handed the nation's sixth-ranked team just its third loss of the year.

"I thought we guarded pretty well," said UIndy head coach Stan Gouard of the final defensive sequence,  "but I thought the switch we made (at the end) was kind of casual; we always talk about aggressive switches.

"(Drummond) made a big shot, but at the same time we have to do a better job of closing out, and we didn't close out well.  He created space with his rocker dribble and pulled up for a great shot."

After leading wire-to-wire in a 17-point win in Indianapolis Jan. 17, UIndy couldn't shake the host Eagles in PAC Arena Thursday night.  The Greyhounds managed a 50-44 edge midway through the second half, but senior TeNale Roland scored 12 of USI's next 14 points to knot it at 58 apiece.

The GLVC East rivals traded threes, with Jordan Loyd and Barker dialing long distance for the Hounds.  The latter's triple made it 64-61 UIndy, but later a Drummond trey and pair of free throws from George Edwards gave the Eagles a 67-66 lead to set up the thrilling finish.

"What determined the game was the way we defended," Gouard concluded.  "I thought we were very casual.  We didn't control the tempo with our defense.  We didn't speed them up enough.  We got two fast break points tonight and that's not UIndy basketball.  We usually get a lot more points than that.

"And then the free throw line.  Twelve for 20 is not good enough.  We cannot win ball games on the road if we don't hit free throws."

Individually, senior Joe Lawson amassed 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting to lead the Greyhounds.  Loyd finished with 18 points and eight rebounds; Barker recorded 10 points, seven assists and six boards; while Salim Gloyd hit a pair of threes to finish with six points.

The Hounds have little time to dwell on Thursday's final score as a rematch at archrival Bellarmine awaits Saturday night.  The Knights (23-2, 15-1) are ranked third in the Division II coaches poll and are No. 1 in the Midwest Regional rankings.

UIndy defeated Bellarmine, 66-62, in Nicoson Hall Jan. 15.
