INDIANAPOLIS – In front of a Senior Night crowd of 3,228 fans, the No. 16 UIndy men's basketball team put a bow on its regular season with a
113-96 win against Saint Joseph's Thursday night in Nicoson Hall. The victory upped the Greyhounds' record to 22-4 overall and 14-4 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, securing a first-round bye in the upcoming GLVC Tournament.
Â
Prior to the contest, UIndy honored its four seniors:
Joe Lawson,
Brennan McElroy,
Dai-Jon Parker and
Kendall Vieke. Contributing to their 87th win as a group, each member of the quartet scored in double figures, with Lawson's 25 good for a team high.
Â
Meanwhile, junior
Lucas Barker hit a major milestone in the first half, breaking UIndy's 49-year-old record for most assists in a season. The Australian native finished with nine dimes on the night to surpass Vasco Walton's 1965-66 total.
Â
The final game of the regular season turned into a shootout, as the in-state opponents combined for 25 3-pointers and 209 total points. Amazingly, the Pumas (6-22, 4-14) shot 56 percent from the floor in the loss, highest by any Greyhound opponent this season.
Â
After leading 51-42 at the break, the Hounds sprinted out to a 22-point advantage, using an 18-5 run to build a cushion.  UIndy hit treys on three consecutive possessions during the surge – one each from Vieke, Lawson and
Jordan Loyd.
Â
Led by senior Cameron Vines and his game-high 29 points, the Pumas whittled the margin to nine with 7:30 to go but would get no closer.
Â
Later, Parker's emphatic one-handed jam punctuated the night. The Baton Rouge, La., native finished with 15 points and three steals in his final home game.
Â
Loyd continued his hot streak with 21 points on 7-of-10 shooting. He has averaged 20.8 points over the last four games.
Â
McElroy notched his team-best seventh double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, Vieke drained four triples on the way to 14 points, while Barker added 12 points to go with his game-high nine assists.
Â
UIndy locked down the No. 4 seed in the upcoming GLVC Tournament and thus earned a bye into the quarterfinals. After seeds five through 12 battle it out this Sunday, those four winners will join the top-four teams in St. Charles, Mo., for the conference quarters Thursday, Mar. 5. Ticket information can be found on the
tournament's official homepage.
