INDIANAPOLIS – Senior
Kelly Walter scored 26 points and fellow classmate
Carly Lythjohan hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds as the Greyhounds defeated visiting Saint Joseph's 82-81 in a thrilling triple-overtime regular season finale.
The Senior Night celebration lasted long past the pregame ceremonies, endured countless setbacks throughout the game, and culminated in a one-point win that ended the regular season on a high note.
"It's an emotional moment for sure, bittersweet," Walter said following the instant classic. "I think overall I was mainly excited, not too nervous, obviously, just excited and knew we had to get this win since it was a big game, and we did that."
Trailing for the first 37 minutes of regulation, the Greyhounds (11-15, 8-10 GLVC) closed on a 9-2 run – holding the Pumas (11-17, 7-11) without a field goal for the final five minutes – forcing the first extra session.
In the first overtime, UIndy immediately fell behind when SJC's Lauren Davis sank a three-pointer on the Pumas' first possession. From there, SJC leading scorer Kalea Parks scored six points in six possessions, and gave the Pumas a 71-67 lead with less than 20 seconds left. Following a Greyhound timeout, Lythjohan sank a clutch layup to bring it within two, and on the ensuing play UIndy had to foul to extend the game.
Courtney Kvachkoff missed both of her freebies, and Walter capitalized by grabbing the rebound and taking it coast-to-coast, finishing at the rim in traffic to send the game into another extra session.
In the second overtime, UIndy again found itself down by four at 75-71 with 2:34 remaining. But again, the Hounds' resilience paid off as
Ashley Montanez and Walter each converted layups to knot the game at 75.
The third and decisive overtime belonged to the Greyhounds. Walter and freshman
Sarah Costello combined to score seven points, and the Pumas' last-second attempt to win the game glanced off the backboard.
Sophomore
Nicole Anderson played 41 solid minutes before fouling out in the first overtime. The Terre Haute, Ind., native was relentless in the post, scoring 20 points, pulling in nine boards and even dishing four assists.
Costello ended with 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting, knocking down three triples, to go along with four assists, four steals and a block.
In her last game in Nicoson Hall, Walter gave fans something to remember by hitting big shot after big shot.
"My mentality is just 'catch and shoot,' and that's what I did," said Walter, who sits just three triples away from setting the program's single-season record.
She finished 6-for-12 from long range, and added six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a block in 53 inspired minutes of action.
Lythjohan was equally integral to the Hounds' victory, filling the stat sheet with 10 rebounds, five points, three blocks, two assists and a steal.
"Carly such a great leader for this team, and I'm glad to say that she's my basketball sister," Walter gleamed. "She's a senior leader and does the little things, and that's what it takes to win."
The Pumas controlled the scoreboard for most of the game, shooting a stellar 54 percent in regulation. Indianapolis native Abbey Titzer finished with a career-high 18 points, and Parks led the squad with 19 on 6-for-13 shooting. SJC went just 4-for-17 (24 percent) in the extra periods, however, and was outworked 42-18 in points in the paint.
UIndy finished nearly 50 percent (32-66) from the field, including 10-for-28 from 3-point land. The Hounds scored 21 points off of 19 SJC turnovers, and finished with 10 steals and five blocks.
Montanez gave 24 strong minutes in her third start of the season, totaling seven points on 3-3 shooting.
Devin Ferguson played 38 minutes off the bench, finishing with five points and an assist, and
Victoria Schaefer added two points, two assists and three rebounds in 18 minutes.
UIndy will travel Sunday to compete in the first round of the GLVC Tournament, and needs to win to keep the season alive. The Hounds' opponent will be determined when Thursday's games are completed.
Notes: Following last Saturday's double-OT game at Bellarmine, this game marks the first back-to-back overtime contest since the 1999-2000 season, and first-ever featuring multiple overtimes. Â
