Q&ALOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UIndy men's basketball team's historic season came to a close Tuesday night, as the Greyhounds (25-6) dropped an
81-72 decision to top-seeded Bellarmine in the finals of the NCAA Division II Midwest Regional. Junior
Jordan Loyd delivered a team-high 23 points, but a late 9-0 run from the Knights (30-3) proved too much to overcome.
Seniors
Joe Lawson and
Brennan McElroy each recorded a double-double in their final collegiate game, going for 20 points and 10 rebounds and 10 points and 13 boards, respectively.
In front of a raucous 2,196 fans in Knights Hall, UIndy built the game's initial lead thanks in part to the assertiveness of Loyd. The Atlanta native drained a couple of early 3-pointers before employing some effective dribble penetration on the way to 15 first-half points.
Â
Foul trouble hit the Hounds midway through the period, however, as leading-scorer Lawson picked up two fouls in one 30-second span and was forced to sit the final 14 minutes of the half. McElory was also whistled for his second personal in the first half, with his coming at the 4:22 mark.
Â
After trailing for the opening 12 minutes, the Knights strung together a 20-4 run to take a double-digit lead.
The rally was emphatically ended by
Salim Gloyd's four-point play. The junior wingman drained a triple from straight away despite the contact from junior George Suggs.
The Hounds whittled the margin down to three by the half when Loyd knocked down a contested 3-pointer in the waning seconds to make it 35-32 Knights.
Loyd came out of the intermission as hot as he went in, as his fourth trey of the night came on the first possession of the final half, tying the game up at 35 all.
Â
Six more ties followed before a six-point surge from the Knights shifted the momentum.
Â
But just when Bellarmine managed to build a cushion, the Hounds came clawing back. Senior
Kendall Vieke nailed a corner three to again make it a one-possession game, and later after the Knights went up seven, Lawson connected from long range to spark a 7-2 mini run.
Â
With the score 62-60 Bellarmine with eight minutes to go, the home team scored nine unanswered points during a four-minute UIndy scoring draught. The scoreless stretch proved fatal, as the Hounds would get no closer than six points the rest of the way.
Â
Loyd and Lawson earned all-tournament team honors, joining Bellarmine's Corbin Maynard, Chris Whitehead and Jake Thelen, who was voted the tournament's Most Outstanding Player .
Â
Senior
Dai-Jon Parker capped his career with five points and three assists. Vieke finished with six points on a pair of 3-pointers - his 103rd and 104th triples of his UIndy career.
