WESTFIELD, Ind. – UIndy baseball swept Illinois Springfield by scores of 6-5 and 11-0 Sunday in a chilly day at Grand Park.
The two wins pushed the Greyhounds' winning streak to five games, improving their record to 11-9 (7-3 GLVC).
GAME ONE: UIndy 6, UIS 5UIndy senior
Daniel Lee's no-doubter in the bottom of the ninth lifted the Greyhounds past the Prairie Stars (10-13, 4-6) in the series opener. Trailing 5-4 entering the bottom of the ninth,
Luke Andrade led off with a walk and
David Gunst moved him up with a sacrifice bunt. After employing small-ball to get Andrade in scoring position, Lee used the long ball to end the game on one swing.
Prior to the walk-off blast the Greyhounds were having trouble capitalizing on scoring opportunities. UIndy left 13 runners on base during the game, including 11 who were in scoring position.
The Greyhounds jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, scoring on a RBI single from
Sean McCracken and a sacrifice fly from
Luke Andrade. But UIS quickly evened the score on Jake Redlinger's two-run homer in the top of the second, just UIndy starter
Matthew Kaplanis' second home run allowed this season.
UIndy regained the lead briefly on a sacrifice fly from Lee, but UIS got the run back in the top of the fourth on a well-executed squeeze play, making it 3-3.
A bit of fortune landed the Hounds their fourth run, as an error from UIS shortstop Kyle Hunsinger allowed
Anthony Asalon to plate the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth.
The Prairie Stars again drew even in the sixth, but also missed on their best opportunity to take their first lead of the day. After a walk and a single to start the frame, UIS' Mike Rothmund smoked a sharp RBI single into left. Then, with runners on the corners and no outs, Kaplanis recorded three consecutive outs to keep the game at 4-4. UIS would take the lead in the seventh, however, scoring a run with two outs on the board against UIndy reliever
Jake Sprinkle.
After being held scoreless for four innings, Lee finally came through with the game-winning homer.
Lee finished the game 1-for-2 with three RBIs, good for his highest RBI total this season. McCracken and
Zach Jacobs each finished with two hits for the Hounds.
Kaplanis finished with six complete innings on the mound, allowing four hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out five. Sprinkle tossed three innings in relief, giving up one run while fanning three batters.
The win was the second consecutive walk-off victory for the Greyhounds, who also defeated Tiffin 6-5 in 10 innings last Wednesday.
GAME TWO: UIndy 11, UIS 0The second game was all UIndy, as the Greyhounds used 11 hits and six UIS errors to run away with an 11-0 victory.
Sophomore
Jordan Tackett (2-2) was nearly flawless on the mound, finishing with a complete-game shutout, scattering just three hits in the seven inning win. He struck out a career-best 11 Prairie Stars while walking just two.
UIndy struck first again, scoring three in the bottom of the second inning.
Alex Ritchie,
Colin Hawk and
Brady Thomas each brought in runs to give the Hounds a 3-0 lead.
The following inning the Greyhounds poured on four runs from three hits and two errors.
Trevor Forde and Asalon each hit two-RBI singles to highlight the inning.
The scoring continued in the fifth, as UIndy brought around two runs on two hits and two more Prairie Star blunders. Lee hit a single into right field, and Andrade scored on an errant throw back into the infield. Lee later scored on a RBI double from Forde to left center.
Up 9-0, freshman
Bryce Aldridge put the icing on the cake with a two-run bomb to left field that scored
Storm Joop. Aldridge's first career homer made it an unreachable 11-0 advantage for the Crimson and Grey.
Tackett picked up his second consecutive winning decision, and after allowing eight runs in his first two starts has given up none in his last two (12.2 total innings).
Lee and Forde each tallied multiple hits for the Greyhounds, and Forde led the team with three RBIs. Lee and Andrade also each scored three runs.
UIndy will try to complete its first GLVC series sweep tomorrow against UIS. The two plan on playing at Greyhound Park with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
