ST. CHARLES, Mo. – The No. 2 Bellarmine Knights overcame a 14-point second-half deficit to defeat the 13th-ranked Greyhounds
81-73 in Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament semifinal.
Competing in program's third semifinal and seeking its first ever finals appearance, UIndy (23-5) seemed poised to knock off top-seeded Bellarmine (27-2) when it took a 51-37 lead with 13 minutes left in the game.
The Knights doubled up the Hounds from that point on, however, outscoring UIndy 44-22 while sinking 17 of their final 21 shots, including all five 3-pointers. Most of the damage was done during a 31-8 run that gave Bellarmine a 68-59 lead with just under four minutes left.
The entire affair was a prototypical "game of runs," starting right from the opening tip.
UIndy started on a 12-2 run to open the game. The Greyhounds' defense picked up where it left off Thursday, limiting the Knights to two points while forcing four turnovers on BU's first seven possessions.
The top-seed responded, using a 19-3 sprint to take a 21-15 advantage midway through the period. Bellarmine went a perfect 7-for-7 during the run and had four steals on the defensive end.
It was the Hounds' turn next, outscoring Bellarmine 15-1 to make it 30-22 just before the final media break. UIndy sank all six charity attempts during the stretch, helping regain the lead and momentum.
The Knights still had a run left, however, using an 11-2 spurt to take the lead again at 33-32. Bellarmine hit its only three 3-pointers of the half during the run to again force a lead change.
The last couple of minutes belonged to the Greyhounds, who closed on a 6-0 swing to carry a 38-33 lead into the half.
Dai-Jon Parker and
Joe Lawson each hit a 3-pointer, and went into the break as the Hounds leading scorers with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
As a team, UIndy shot an even 50 percent (12-24), including a sharp 6-for-10 from long range. The Greyhounds assisted on 10 of their 12 field goals.
Bellarmine also went 12-for-24 from the field, scoring 17 of its 33 points in the paint.
Out of the break it appeared the Hounds had put an end to the Knights' prolific offense, keeping them to only four points and just two field goal attempts in the first seven minutes of the second half, forcing four early BU turnovers.
When
Lucas Barker completed an and-one after an offensive board from
Brennan McElroy, making it 49-37, UIndy had all of the momentum in the building. Barker's left-handed layup the following possession gave the Hounds their biggest lead of the game.
But the GLVC's top shooting squad wouldn't be denied for too long. That's when Knights ripped off a 23-3 run going 9-for-11 from the floor, and took a 60-54 lead just minutes after trailing by 14. Â
Rusty Troutman hit four 3-pointers on the run, helping the Knights complete a 20-point swing to take control.
After a slow start Bellarmine finished a remarkable 78 percent (18-23) from the field in the second half, going 30-for-47 for the game. GLVC Player of the Year Jake Thelan scored 24 points, adding seven rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Troutman finished 5-for-7 from long range, totaling 19 points.
UIndy went 25-for-54 (46 percent) for the game, but after a strong opening half from 3-point range went just 1-for-7 in the second period.
Lawson led the Hounds with 19 points to go along with eight rebounds; and
Brennan McElroy had 13 points, eight rebounds and two steals.
Parker finished the game 6-of-11 from the floor, recording 18 points, three assists and three steals. The Knights held Thursday's star,
Jordan Loyd, to eight points on a 1-for-8 shooting performance.
The Greyhounds now await the NCAA Division II selection show tomorrow at 10:30 p.m. ET to find out their seed for the upcoming Midwest Regional. The show can be seen at NCAA.com.
