NASHVILLE, Tenn. – UIndy scored four late runs but could not complete a comeback bid Monday afternoon, falling 9-5 to Quincy in Nashville, Tenn.
The Greyhounds (1-5) met the Hawks (4-2) on Trevecca Nazarene's campus, after the two squads were originally supposed to meet in Evansville, Ind., during the canceled Dunn Hospitality Classic.
Quincy jumped on UIndy early, scoring six runs in the first four innings.
The Hawks' first three batters of the game reached safely, putting sophomore starter
Jordan Tackett into an early jam. Tackett avoided a big inning, however, allowing just two runs to score before ending the inning.
Quincy kept the bats rolling, plating two more in both the third and fourth innings. In the third, the Hawks chased Tackett and scored twice on two hits and an error. The following frame the Hawks did all their damage with two outs. After reliever
Dylan Stutsman recorded back-to-back outs, Quincy ripped off four consecutive hits to score two runs, making it 6-0.
UIndy got on the board in the top of the fifth innings, as
Zach Jacobs hit a two-out RBI single to right center, bringing in
Colin Hawk.
But Quincy quickly increased its lead with runs in both the fifth and sixth, making it 8-1.
In the top of the seventh, Hawk led off with a single, and
Sean McCracken double down the left field line to bring Hawk around to score. Jacobs again delivered with an RBI single that scored McCracken, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
The Greyhounds continued their late comeback bid in the eighth inning, loading up the bases with no outs. Hawk singled into right center, plating
Storm Joop. After back-to-back strikeouts, Jacobs recorded his third RBI with a single to left that brought home
Zach Howard. Quincy's Brandon Ley then fanned
Daniel Lee – who represented the go-ahead run – to limit the damage to only a pair of runs and end the inning with the Hawks up 8-5.
Quincy added insurance in the bottom of the frame, making it 9-5, and in the ninth the Hounds were retired in order.
Jacobs went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBI, and Hawk was 3-for-3 with a pair of walks, two runs and an RBI.
Trevor Forde was 2-for-3 with one double.
Freshman
Pete Allen tossed three innings in relief, surrendering a run and three hits.
The Greyhounds travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to face Lee University tomorrow at 6 p.m. and Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET.
