Weck's walk-off highlights softball's split with No. 3 UMSL

INDIANAPOLIS – Saturday's doubleheader between No. 10 UIndy and No. 3 Missouri-St. Louis lived up to its billing as the two squads split game. The Greyhounds began by winning in walk-off fashion, 3-2, in the opener before the Tritons answered with a 6-1 victory in the closer.

UMSL (38-4, 23-3 GLVC) entered the day as the only team ahead of the Hounds (35-9, 20-4) in both the GLVC standings and Midwest Region rankings.

GAME ONE: UIndy 3, UMSL 2
Saturday's opener not only featured two top-ten programs, but also slated NCAA Division II career strikeout leaders Hannah Perryman and Morgan Foley against each other between the circle. Perryman (20-3) and Foley (25-4), both juniors, combined to strikeout 27 batters.

As exciting as the two pitchers were, UIndy's Tayler Weck stole the show with a two-out walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Greyhounds in comeback fashion.

Trailing 0-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Casey Williamson led off with a walk and moved to second on a single from Jenny Thompson. Jessie Noone then reached on an error, allowing Williamson to score, and Weck followed with the game-winning double deep to left center that scored both baserunners.

Prior to the big seventh inning it appeared two solo homers from UMSL would be the difference. Foley allowed only three hits, but two were solo shots from Katie Rutledge and Brianna Butler.

The Greyhounds snapped Perryman's stretch of 15.1 consecutive perfect innings with a pair of singles in the bottom of the fifth, but both runners were stranded on base. Until the seventh inning heroics Perryman had been able to keep the Hounds in check.

GAME TWO: UMSL 6, UIndy 1
UIndy fell in the second game 6-1 despite equaling UMSL's nine hits for the contest.

The Greyhounds scored first in the second game, plating a run in the opening inning on UMSL starter Brittni Chapman, but couldn't fully capitalize on a bases-loaded, no-out situation.

The Tritons quickly called in Kelsey Bailey (1-0) out of the bullpen, and the sophomore proceeded to pitch out of the jam and go on to throw seven scoreless innings to earn her first win of the season. She gave up six hits and struck out seven.

UMSL scored its six runs across five innings, led by Butler's three RBIs and 2-for-3 game at the dish. She also hit her second homer of the day and 50th of her career in the finale.

Coryn Tirpak (4-5) pitched four innings for UIndy, and Samantha Hogan tossed three innings of relief while striking out six batters.

UIndy travels to Owensboro, Ky., to face former GLVC-member Kentucky Wesleyan for a doubleheader Tuesday.
