WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy baseball team swept an important regional doubleheader against Notre Dame College Tuesday, winning by scores of 9-3 and 5-2 at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
Â
GAME ONE: UIndy 9, NDC 3 (7 inn.)A grand slam from
Anthony Asalon and a solid outing from starter
Connor Mailloux helped UIndy (24-17) take the opener 9-3.
Â
The Greyhounds got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when a fielding error from the right fielder allowed
Zach Jacobs to score, giving them an early 1-0 edge.
Â
UIndy poured on six runs on five hits in the bottom of the fourth, opening up a 7-0 lead.
Alex Ritchie brought home
Colin Hawk on a RBI triple, and
Luke Andrade followed with a sacrifice fly to score Ritchie. The big at-bat of the inning came a few batters later with the bases full. Asalon smoked 0-1 pitch over the left field fence, marking his first homer of the season and first grand slam of his Greyhound career.
Â
In the sixth the Hounds scored two more when Asalon and
David Gunst delivered RBIs, stretching the lead to 9-0.
Â
Notre Dame's first hit against Mailloux (2-4) didn't come until the top of the fourth, and the UIndy righty took his one-hitter into the seventh and final inning. The Falcons were able to eventually chase Mailloux from the mound and score three runs, but couldn't threaten the Hounds' lead as J.T. Terwilliger came in from the bullpen and retired two straight to end the game.
Â
Mailloux finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out five.
Â
Asalon led the Hounds' offense with a career-best five RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Â
GAME TWO: UIndy 5, NDC 2 (7 inn.)Timely hitting and strong defense allowed UIndy to sweep the doubleheader with a 5-2 win in the finale.
Â
Again the Greyhounds got on the board first, scoring twice on two hits and two NDC errors in the bottom of the third. First
Luke Andrade scored an unearned run as
Daniel Lee grounded out. After Jacobs' triple to right center, Asalon delivered his sixth RBI of the day with a single to left.
Â
Adam Cornwell (3-3) had a similarly strong start in the second game as Mailloux had in the opener, taking a no-hitter into the fifth before Blake Miller successfully reached on a base knock to right field. But just two batters later Shane DeFranco tied the score with a two-run homer over the left field fence.
Â
The Hounds immediately responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame, regaining a 5-2 lead. All three runs were scored with two outs on the board, as
Brady Thomas and
Sean McCracken each delivered clutch RBI base hits.
Â
Andrade punctuated the win with a spectacular defensive play in the top of the seventh at third base. He dove toward the base line and snagged a hard-hit groundball, rose up and fired to first base, beating the runner by half a step to help seal the win.
Â
Dylan Stutsman came on with the bases loaded and recorded the final out, earning his first save of the season.
Â
Jacobs went 2-for-3 with two runs in the finale, and McCracken led the team with two RBIs.
Â
UIndy returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend, welcoming Wisconsin-Parkside to Indianapolis for a four-game tilt beginning Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.
