KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The No. 9 UIndy softball team settled for a split in the regular season's final doubleheader, trading shutout wins at Truman State Sunday. The Greyhounds (39-10, 23-5 GLVC) blanked the Bulldogs, 8-0, in the game one before falling, 1-0, in the capper.
Â
GAME 1Pitcher
Morgan Foley nearly notched her first career perfect game in the opener. The Greyhound ace retired 14 consecutive batters until finally surrendering a single with two outs in the fifth and final inning. The reigning NFCA Division II Pitcher of the Week finished with eight Ks and zero walks on the way to her sixth shutout of the season.
Â
The UIndy offense amassed eight runs of support, six of which came on just two swings. Sophomore
Natalie Lalich and senior
Taylor Russell both cranked three-run homers, with Lalich's coming in the third inning and Russell's in the fifth.
Â
Russell's shot was the 42nd of her career, tying the program's all-time mark. She finished with four RBIs on the afternoon, as her first-inning double scored fellow-senior
Casey Williamson.
Â
Sydney Russell also added an RBI double, plating
Erika Goodwin in the fifth.
Â
UIndy's one through five hitters all scored at least one run, including three from Williamson.
Â
GAME 2Foley again got the start in game two and again tossed 4 2/3 innings before Truman managed its first hit. This time, however, Nikki Moss reached on an infield single and eventually came around on two wild pitches before Foley (29-5) could record the third out.
Â
Meanwhile, TSU's pitcher Kelsea Dorsey (15-4) scattered five hits and three walks to earn the shutout victory. The Hounds managed multiple base runners in three innings but could not score.
Â
Williamson compiled three walks and a stolen base, while Lalich recorded a single and a double. S. Russell,
Jenny Thompson and
Katie Kelly each had a single.
Â
UIndy begins postseason play next week when it heads to East Peoria, Ill., for the 2015 GLVC Championship Tournament. The eight-team, double-elimination tourney starts Friday, May 1.
