Softball heads to Super Regional with 4-3 win

INDIANAPOLIS – By virtue of Sunday's 4-3 win versus Trevecca Nararene, the 10th-ranked UIndy softball team clinched a spot in the 2015 NCAA Division II Midwest Super Regional.  The Greyhounds received an RBI single from Sydney Russell in the bottom of the sixth, plating Katie Kelly with the eventual game-winning run.

The Greyhounds swept through this weekend's four-team, double-elimination Midwest Regional 2 tournament.  The run included two wins against a talented Trevecca team – an extra-inning 3-1 victory Friday and today's one-run final.

The Hounds will be making their third trip to the Super Regional, with the previous two coming in 2009 and 2013.  They will face GLVC-rival and No. 1-ranked Missouri-St. Louis in a best-of-three showdown May 15-16 in St. Louis.  Game one is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m. ET, while games two and three (if necessary) will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. ET and 3:30 p.m. ET, respectively.

Junior pitcher Morgan Foley added to her record-breaking season today, garnering win No.36 to surpass the school's single-season mark of 35 set by former-teammate Jennifer DeMotte in 2012.  Foley also became the first Greyhound to reach the 400-strikeout plateau for a season.  Her 11 Ks Sunday marked the 18th double-digit strikeout start of the year.

The Hounds took the first lead of the day in the third inning when sophomore Natalie Lalich belted a three-run bomb to left, scoring Casey Williamson and Taylor Russell.  It was the second home run for Lalich at the regional, as the Greenwood, Ind., product finished the weekend 6-for-9 at the plate with team highs in batting average (.667), on-base percentage (.700) and slugging (1.444).

Fresh off notching their 40th win of the season yesterday versus Ashland, the Trojans cut into the UIndy's lead with an unearned run in the top of the fourth.  Kelsey Kemp coaxed a leadoff walk and eventually came around on an error, a wild pitch and a single.

TNU tied it up an inning later when Lindsey Stephens plated two with her RBI single.  Mackenzie Leding immediately followed with her third hit of the day, but right fielder Jessie Noone erased the potential go-ahead run by throwing out Stephens at the plate.

The skies opened up at that point, as a short but heavy downpour delayed the game for 30 minutes.

When play resumed, the Trojans had a runner and second with two outs, but Foley halted the rally with a strikeout to keep the score knotted at 3-3.

The tie didn't last long, as S. Russell's game winner came in the bottom of the sixth.  Kelly started the action with a one-out double.  She hustled home on Russell's shot up the middle, just beating the subsequent throw to the plate.

The Trojans threatened one last time in the seventh, but Foley once again slammed the door with an inning-ending K, stranding the tying run at third.

S. Russell, Williamson and Kelly each had two hits apiece.
