ROMEOVILLE, Ill. – UIndy baseball rolled over Lewis in a doubleheader sweep Saturday, continuing its hot streak with wins of 14-7 and 6-1 to wrap up the conference slate.
The Greyhounds (32-17, 26-10 GLVC) haven't been on the losing end of a series since April 4-5 at Southern Indiana, and have gone a remarkable 17-4 since, including a current 10-game win streak that's helped them capture the GLVC East Division.
GAME ONE: UIndy 14, Lewis 7 (7 inn.)The Greyhounds scored a season-high 14 runs in Saturday's opener, clinching the series in a seven-inning rout over the Flyers (21-26, 15-21).
In the first inning, a
Brady Thomas groundout brought in
Anthony Asalon to open the scoring.
Colin Hawk scored an unearned run the following inning to make it 2-1.
A five-run third inning gave the Hounds a sizeable 7-1 advantage. After
Zach Jacobs and
Sean McCracken each scored,
Daniel Lee hit a bases-clearing triple to drive in three runs – all unearned after an error kept the inning alive with two outs.
UIndy poured on four more in the fourth inning. McCracken hit a two-RBI single to left, and Hawk followed with his second homer of the series to bring the lead up to 11-1. It was the junior tranfer's fifth dinger of the season.
Lewis tagged UIndy starter
Jake Sprinkle (8-1) for three in the fifth inning on a three-run homer, but UIndy quickly responded with three in the sixth. Hawk,
Luke Andrade and Lee each recorded RBI hits.
The Flyers wound up scoring six runs in the final three innings, but the Hounds' lead was insurmountable.
Sprinkle finished with five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with four strikeouts.
Scott Mitchell and
Jonathan Bowen each tossed an inning in relief.
GAME TWO: UIndy 6, Lewis 1The series sweep was secured with a 6-1 win in the finale.
Thomas and Hawk went to work immediately, delivering RBIs in the opening inning to help the Hounds jump out to a 2-0 lead.
Lee followed in the second inning with a two-run homer over the center field fence, scoring
Alex Ritchie. It was the second dinger of the series for the Australian and sixth of the year, trailing only McCracken's eight on the team.
Hawk and Lee weren't the only two to record multiple homers in the series. In the top of the ninth Ritchie hit a solo shot to left center, making it 5-1. All three Greyhounds hit homers both Friday and Saturday.
Jacobs delivered a sacrifice fly after Ritchie's home run, giving UIndy a 6-1 lead heading to the Flyers' final at bat.
UIndy's
Connor Mailloux (4-4) gave up one unearned run in the bottom of the first, but settled in and finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing only five hits while picking up the winning decision.
The Greyhounds outscored the Flyers 35-9 in the four-game sweep, and had five batters hit over .400. Nine different Hounds drove in a run, and ten scored. Hawk, Lee, Brady, Asalon and Jacobs each had at least five hits across the series.
On the mound, UIndy pitchers had a 1.97 ERA versus Lewis' 6.75. The Hounds' seven pitchers that made appearances combined to post 20 strikeouts to only two walks in 32 innings.
UIndy finishes the regular season Monday with an in-region game at Oakland City at 3 p.m. ET before the GLVC Tournament begins later in the week.
