Greyhounds punch ticket to GLVC championship game

EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The No. 2-seed UIndy softball team (42-11) finished a long day at the GLVC Championship Tournament with a come-from-behind win against sixth-seeded Lewis Saturday evening, downing the Flyers by an 11-4 count.  Back-to-back home runs by Jenny Thompson and Jessie Noone erased the Lewis lead, helping lift the Greyhounds (42-11) to their third victory in as many elimination games on the day.

In three must-win contests Saturday, the Hounds hit six home runs, turned four double plays, set two individual records and tossed two shutouts.

The stage is now set for the top two seeds to face off in the conference championship game Sunday at 1 p.m.  After advancing through the winnings' bracket, No. 1-seed and two-time defending-champ Missouri-St. Louis needs to win just one game tomorrow, while the Hounds need two Ws to dethrone UMSL.

One game after Taylor Russell set a new UIndy career home run mark, Saturday's second game started with another school record.  Senior Casey Williamson snapped her own single-season standard when she coaxed a base on balls in the first inning.  The free pass was her 40th of the season, surpassing the 39 she drew as a freshman in 2012.

Meanwhile, junior Morgan Foley (32-6) was once again masterful in the circle.  The Louisville, Ky., native tossed a four-hit, 10-K  shutout to earn the win.  The performance capped a stretch of 22 scoreless innings by UIndy opponents.

The Hounds got on the board with two unearned runs in the second.  Natalie Lalich, who was hit by a pitch, scored on a fielding error, and Taylor Weck crossed on Sydney Russell's bases-loaded walk.

T. Russell punctuated the scoring with her second bomb in as many contests with a leadoff shot in the fifth.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fourth, the Hounds hung a five-spot on the board to take control.  After Lalich's sac fly cut it to one, Thompson blasted a three-run bomb to give the lead to the Crimson & Grey.  Noone immediately followed with a solo shot, good for her second collegiate homer.

The Flyers (27-22) came right back in the bottom half of the fourth, as an RBI double and a single scored a run and put a runner at third in what was now a two-run ballgame.  UIndy starting pitcher Coryn Tirpak battled for 3 1/3 innings, but the Hounds went back to Foley in hopes of holding lead.

Foley, who was ultimately credited with the win, surrendered an RBI single to the first batter she faced but fanned the next two to end the threat and keep the Hounds ahead, 5-4.

The UIndy bats responded with another crooked number in the sixth.  With the bases juiced and just one out, Williamson launched a 1-1 pitch to deep center, clearing the bases with her second grand slam of the season to give UIndy a commanding seven-run cushion.

Lewis would not score again, as Foley (33-6) and Sam Hogan combined to pitch the final 3 2/3 innings to close out the win.

S. Russell recorded a double, a single, two runs and a walk; Katie Kelly finished 3-for-4 with a run and a stolen base; and Thompson and Noone combined for 13 total bases, three runs and four ribbies.
