OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – The UIndy softball team wrapped up a great 2015 season Saturday afternoon, falling 2-1 to 20th-ranked California (Pa.) in an elimination game at the NCAA Division II Championship.  Despite getting out-hit 8-2, the Vulcans' two-run third inning proved to be just enough to advance to Sunday's national semifinal.
Â
The outcome not only ends the Hounds' championship run but also the collegiate careers of the team's five seniors.Â
Amanda Ciran,
Sydney Russell,
Taylor Russell,
Jessica Vleck and
Casey Williamson helped the Greyhounds to a stellar 196-45 (.813) record in their time at UIndy, good for the most wins and highest winning percentage over any four-year period in school history. Their tenure includes four NCAA Tournament berths, two Super Regional appearances and of course a "World Series" trip – the second ever for the program.
Â
The Vulcans (45-18) staved off elimination twice Saturday. After coming back from a 6-0 hole to beat Central Missouri 7-6 in extra innings in the morning, Cal U edged the Hounds with a one-run victory immediately following.
Â
Both the Vulcans' runs and both their hits came in the decisive third frame, all coming with two outs. A pair of ground balls started what appeared to be a quiet inning, but Cal went on to sandwich a pair of walks with two singles, the latter being a two-run knock from Lindsey Reicoff.
Â
UIndy starting pitcher
Morgan Foley (39-10) only allowed two base runners the rest of the game. The First Team All-American struck out six and walked four in her final outing of the year. She came one win shy of 40 for the season, setting the new UIndy single-season record at 39.
Â
Offensively the Hounds amassed eight singles against Cal starter Alex Sagl (29-5) but could not generate any extra-base pop. The lone run came in the sixth when a hit and an illegal pitch moved
Taylor Russell to second base ahead of
Jessie Noone's RBI single.Â
Â
Williamson tacked on two more hits to her UIndy career-high total. The Indy native went 2-for-3 at the dish to finish with 280 base hits for her career. Her final career batting average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage all set new school records in Division II competition
Â
Sophomore
Katie Kelly also had two hits, including a two-out knock in the seventh.Â
Sydney Russell and
Tayler Weck added a single apiece.
