ROLLA, Mo. – UIndy's
Stan Gouard wanted his players to have "amnesia" following Thursday's
77-65 loss at Drury, and it appears they took those words from the eighth-year head man to heart.
The 20th-ranked Greyhounds (11-3, 5-1 GLVC) lit up Missouri S&T (7-9, 3-3) in a convincing 98-82 victory Saturday, shooting a season-best 60 percent (37-62) from the floor.
One of several differences between Thursday's loss and Saturday's win was the UIndy assist-to-turnover ratio, which swung from 0.14 to 1.83 after the Hounds racked up 22 dimes to only 12 turnovers against S&T. Senior
Lucas Barker finished with a season-high eight assists to lead the way.
Gouard could not have scripted Saturday's first half any better, as his Greyhound squad bounced back from their worst offensive performance of the season. In the entire game at Drury, UIndy recorded 65 points on 20-for-52 shooting and three assists. In the first half alone against the Miners, UIndy managed 51 points on 19-for-28 shooting, dishing 13 assists.
Senior
Jamel Crocker netted five of UIndy's first seven points to start the scoring, and shortly after the Hounds tore off separate runs of 9-0 and 10-0 to jump out to a 26-10 lead midway through the half.
The Greyhounds later reeled off an 8-0 stretch – capped by sophomore
Eric Davidson's third 3-pointer of the half – grabbing their biggest lead to that point at 47-28 with 2:22 remaining.
UIndy carried a 51-36 advantage into the half after shooting a blistering 68 percent as a team, getting nine points apiece from Davidson, sophomore
Alex Etherington and junior
Ernest Maize. Ball movement was key to the Greyhounds' first half efficiency, accumulating 13 assists on 19 buckets.
The second period was much of the same for the Hounds, who led by at least 15 points the entire 20 minutes.
Jimmy King caught fire in the second half, at one point scoring 11 consecutive points for the Greyhounds in a span that lasted just over two minutes. He wound up with 14 in the half and tied a career-high with 16 total points.
Etherington finished with 14 points in 18 minutes on 6-for-8 shooting, and senior
Tyler Rambo totaled 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
A primary concern for Gouard between Thursday and Saturday was the involvement of his big men Crocker and Maize. Those two combined to score 17 points while going 7 of 10, and UIndy as a team finished with 43 points in the paint. Maize also pulled in a game-high 13 boards.
"We got the ball inside tonight, and that was my emphasis in practice today," Gouard told WICR after the game. "Looking at the Drury game, our big guys didn't touch the ball. We didn't reward those guys for hard work."
Despite not reaching double-figures for the first time all season, UIndy leading scorer
Jordan Loyd provided six points, six rebounds, four assists and a steal in 23 minutes. Fellow senior
Joe Retic finished with nine points, three assists and two steals.
The Hounds got a remarkable 56 points from the bench, compared to only 20 for the Miner reserves. UIndy also out-paced S&T in second chance scoring (20 to 10) and fastbreak points (15 to 4).
