Loyd's late triple seals 78-75 comeback victory over McKendree

INDIANAPOLIS – With the game tied 75-75, senior Jordan Loyd drained a 3-pointer with just 1.3 seconds on the clock to give the UIndy men's basketball squad a 78-75 victory over McKendree Saturday afternoon in Nicoson Hall.

On the previous possession, McKendree's Kyle Yates hit one free throw to tie the game, but missed his second attempt that would have given the Bearcats a one-point lead. Off the miss, Loyd raced up the court and hit perhaps his biggest shot of the season.

"We didn't know if we were going to call timeout or not, so I was kind of thinking about the strategy," Loyd said afterward. "But once (Yates) missed it I saw (Coach Stan Gouard) waive his hand and I knew we've got to get a quick shot. (McKendree's Nate Michael) kind of backed off me a bit, so I finally got a chance to knock one down."

The latest in a long line of clutch Loyd shots secured the Hounds fourth win in a row; lifting the Greyhounds to 14-3 overall and 8-1 in the GLVC. Fellow senior Joe Retic netted a career-high 21 to help the Hounds' effort.

McKendree (9-8, 2-7 GLVC) entered the game second-to-last in the GLVC East Division, but gave the Greyhounds all they could handle from start to finish.

The visitors shot out of the gate, hitting eight of their first 15 to grab a 20-15 lead at the under-12 media timeout, and kept the pressure on the favored Hounds. The Bearcats used an 11-0 run near the end of the period to grab a 15-point lead – their biggest of the day.

The stunned Hounds were stagnant on the offensive side of the ball, unable to consistently piece together consecutive scoring possessions. At the half, they trailed 43-28 while shooting just 1 of 9 from long range and 32 percent overall.

UIndy came out of the break on the attack, pulling off a 13-4 run to get the deficit back down to single figures.

The Hounds kept chipping away, finding answers offensively while getting stops on the defensive end. At the midway point junior Ernest Maize converted a short layup, bringing UIndy within three at 55-52.

Minutes later Loyd and Retic provided crucial buckets to give the Hounds their first lead of the day.

With 7:25 left, Loyd drove the lane and finished with a tomahawk slam that lifted the fans and UIndy bench to their feet.

On the other end sophomore Alex Etherington stole the ball away, leading to Retic's layup that made it 60-59 Greyhounds.

The Bearcats never rolled over – immediately answering with a 5-0 run to regain the lead – but it seemed the Hounds got every big shot they needed down the stretch.

Senior Tyler Rambo converted a layup while being fouled, and only seconds later tipped in a UIndy miss to bring UIndy back within one, 69-68.

Etherington delivered the next big shot – a 3-pointer from the right corner that gave the Hounds a 71-69 edge with 2:32 remaining.

McKendree's David Franklin, who led all scorers with 25, drained a deep 3-pointer as one final act of Bearcat resilience, pulling within 75-74.

The next McKendree possession, Yates drove the baseline and found a way to the free throw line, where he was able to tie the game at 75 apiece before Loyd's last-second heroics.

UIndy outscored the Bearcats 50-28 in the second half, completing its second double-digit comeback of the week after coming from behind down 14 at Saint Joseph's last Monday (Jan. 18).

The Greyhounds shot over 51 percent in the second half, and outscored their opponents 30 to 12 in the paint. They also converted 10 of their second-half offensive rebounds into 12 points.

Loyd netted 23 points on 8-for-18 shooting, and added 11 rebounds in his second double-double effort of the season.

Retic's career-high came on the strength of his 7-for-15 shooting effort and perfect 6-for-6 performance from the foul line. He added three assists, two rebounds and a steal in 32 minutes.

Etherington finished with 11 points and a career-high six rebounds, four coming on the offensive end. Rambo notched 10 points and seven boards off the bench.

The Greyhounds will carry their four-game win streak into Evansville, Ind., next week, where they will face Southern Indiana Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET.
