Kempson scores 29 as Greyhounds race past Thorobreds

FRANKFORT, Ky. – Jesse Kempson continued his prolific sophomore campaign, setting yet another career-high to help the UIndy men's basketball team earn a 94-83 victory on the road against Kentucky State in the Exum Center.

Kempson poured in a personal-best 29 points in 33 minutes, shooting 10 of 18 overall and 5 of 9 from long range. Jimmy King (16 points), Eric Davidson (14), Alex Etherington (11) and Ajay Lawton (10) also finished in double figures for the Greyhounds.

The win, their first away from Nicoson Hall this season, snaps a short two-game skid and sends the Hounds into conference action next week on a high note.

"Our guys responded to the challenge after (losing to Lake Superior State and Hillsdale)," Head Coach Stan Gouard told WICR. "I'm happy our guys finally got a road win. It always feels good to go into a game with a win, so our confidence is getting back to where it should be heading into league play."

Tied at 39 apiece at halftime, UIndy turned up the offensive pressure in the second period, shooting 63 percent (17-27) from the field while knocking down 7 of 11 from 3-point land. Lawton netted all 10 of his points in the second half, hitting both of his 3-point tries.

The Thorobreds (1-3) wouldn't go quietly, however. KSU erased a double-digit deficit in about five minutes of game time, drawing even at 68-68 at the 6:31 mark.

Despite the late ties, UIndy never allowed KSU to retake the lead at any point down the stretch, and eventually secured the win behind a solid 9-for-10 effort from the charity stripe in the final two-plus minutes.

"Everybody contributed, it really was a great team win," Gouard said. Regarding his defense, the ninth-year head man said, "Our zone looked pretty good, and for the most part we talked well on defense. We tried to mix it up … and our guys did a good job changing it up on the fly."

Kentucky State finished just under 45 percent (33-74) for the game, but hit only 7 of 21 (33%) 3-pointers.

King led the Hounds with a career-high nine rebounds, and also paced the team with four assists.

The Hounds finished 20 of 23 from the free throw line as a team, led by Davidson's 6 makes on 7 attempts.

UIndy officially begins Great Lakes Valley Conference action next week in the "appetizer" portion of the conference schedule. The Greyhounds travel to meet a pair of GLVC East Division rivals in Wisconsin-Parkside Dec. 1 at 8:30 p.m. ET, and Lewis Dec. 3 at 4 p.m.
