MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – In their final game before the holiday break, the UIndy men's basketball team fell 110-83 at No. 14 Barry Monday night down in Miami Shores, Fla.
Although the Greyhounds (3-7) put together a commendable offensive effort, they couldn't keep pace with one of the best attacks in all of Division II. The Bucs (8-1) entered Monday ranked in the top ten in the nation in scoring offense, assists per game, assist-to-turnover ratio and field goal percentage, and upped each of those numbers in their win against UIndy.
Barry's senior forward Adrian Gonzalez dropped a career-high 37 points, leading the charge as the home side finished with a 67.7 (42-62) shooting percentage – good for the second best mark in program history. Within the perimeter, the Bucs sank 32 of 38 (84.2%).
"(Gonzalez) took over the game,"
Stan Gouard told WICR after the loss. "We put a number of guys on him and he continued to score.
"Overall (Barry) had too many straight line drives. We didn't contest shots, and they moved the ball really well. We didn't compete on a high enough level to win the game."
The Hounds started off well, leading 13-12 at the first media break thanks to efficient scoring from sophomore
Jimmy King.
Midway through the first half, the Bucs used a 14-5 stretch to take their first double-digit lead of the night, 36-26, with less than seven minutes on the clock. By the time the halftime horn sounded, Barry held a 54-43 advantage.
The Bucs scored an absurd 1.45 points per possession in the opening half, hitting 19 of 28 (67.9%) overall and half of their 3-pointers.
It was much of the same in the second half, as the Hounds couldn't stay step-for-step with the Bucs down the stretch.
UIndy got as close as 10 after an
Alex Etherington layup five minutes into the period, but Gonzalez hit one of his 17 field goals on the ensuing possession to widen the lead back to 12. Barry's biggest lead of the night was 28 at 98-74 with just over five minutes left.
Junior transfer
D.J. Davis had one of his best performances of the season, hitting 8 of 13 to score a career-best 20 points in 27 minutes. He also led the Hounds with five assists and two steals.
Four others finished in double figures, including Etherington (13 points),
Eric Davidson (11),
Tate Hall (10) and King (10).
UIndy now awaits the New Year, and will travel west to face Missouri-St. Louis (Jan. 5) and Maryville (Jan. 7) as GLVC action resumes.
