LIBERTY, Mo. – Behind a career-high scoring performance from senior
Joe Retic, the UIndy Greyhounds handed the William Jewell Cardinals a 96-89 overtime loss Saturday in The Mabee Center.
Retic shined brightest in the extra session, scoring 9 of his 23 during the 5-minute period, as UIndy leading scorer
Jordan Loyd sat on the bench after fouling out.
"We came out strong in the overtime period, and I was really proud we won the five-minute war without Loyd," Head Coach
Stan Gouard told WICR after the win. "Other guys stepped up, especially on the defensive end and rebounding. Retic also came up big, and I'm really happy for him."
UIndy (18-5, 12-3 GLVC) truly dominated the extra session, outscoring the Cardinals (8-15, 3-12) 17 to 10 while going 5 of 6 overall and 7 of 8 from the foul line.
Prior to overtime, it appeared senior
Tyler Rambo gave the Hounds a miraculous game-winner in regulation.
As UIndy held the ball for the last shot, Loyd's long 3-pointer missed its mark, and Rambo came up with the offensive rebound. His quick put-back appeared to beat the buzzer, but upon further review the officials waved it off, sending the game to overtime.
Loyd picked up his fifth foul shortly after the start of overtime, leaving the Hounds without their leading scorer. That's when Retic, Rambo and others put together their best five-minute stretch of the game.
Maintaining a slim 89-87 lead with just under one minute remaining, Rambo laid in a bucket off a slick bounce pass from senior
Lucas Barker. Just seconds later, Barker stole the ball away and hit Rambo for a transition layup to all but seal the win.
The first 40 minutes didn't always go quite as smoothly for the Hounds. For the sixth time in nine games, the Hounds found themselves trailing by double digits in the first half.
William Jewell shot over 60 percent during the opening period, and carried a 42-36 lead into the break as Larry Fitzgerald led all scorers with 15.
But the Greyhounds had an answer, using an 11-0 run that spanned the end of the first and beginning of the second periods to pull within four, 42-38.
Minutes later, after runs of 7-0 and 6-0, the Greyhounds eventually grabbed their first lead since early in the game at 60-59.
Despite a late spurt that put the Cardinals back on top, UIndy bounced back after sophomore
Alex Etherington sank two 3-pointers in the final minutes to make it 79-79.
With less than one minute left, Rambo came up huge with two offensive rebounds, the last of which led to his near-game-winner.
"Tyler (Rambo) sort of redeemed himself after Thursday's game," Gouard commented. "He played really well in front of his family here at home. He rebounded his butt off and made big plays late."
A native of nearby Grandview, Mo., Rambo finished with 16 points on a 6-for-11 shooting effort.
Although he eventually fouled out, Loyd contributed 17 points, seven boards and three steals, going 6 of 10 from the floor.
Etherington totaled 16 points – hitting a career-high four 3-pointers – and added four rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
Retic's 23 points came on a 9-for-16 shooting effort and 7 of 8 mark at the foul line. He also had three rebounds, three steals and two assists in what was perhaps his best all-around game of the season.
William Jewell got 28 points from Fitzgerald and 24 from Patrick Whelan.
UIndy continues its road swing with two crucial games at GLVC East rivals Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis next week. The Hounds and Flyers tip Thursday at 8:30 p.m. ET in Romeoville, Ill.
