INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy men's basketball wrapped up the regular season with an 86-73 victory over in-state rival Saint Joseph's Wednesday night, marking the fifth 20-win campaign in a row.
The Greyhounds (20-6, 14-4 GLVC) had four double-digit scorers in
Ernest Maize (15 points),
Lucas Barker (14),
Jordan Loyd (13) and
Eric Davidson (11), with
Alex Etherington and
Tyler Rambo finishing with nine apiece. Maize also completed his second double-double of the year by hauling in a game-high 14 boards.
The all-around effort saw the Hounds shoot an even 50 percent (28-56) from the field while holding the Pumas to just 32 percent (23-71). UIndy also outrebounded its guests, 48 to 32.
"It was very important to keep the momentum going with a win tonight," UIndy Assistant Coach
Aundrey Wright told WICR afterward. "We knew Saint Joseph's was playing its last game and had nothing to lose tonight. We answered their intensity and we did a good job on the defensive end tonight."
Wright continued: "We gave up a lot of offensive rebounds that led to some put-backs, but we limited their outside shooting."
Despite a poor shooting night – which included a 6-for-27 clip from 3-point range – Saint Joseph's (8-19, 4-14) hung in from start to finish.
UIndy grabbed its first 10-point lead just over one minute into the second half, 45-35, but never quite put the game away as the Pumas made just enough buckets to stay within striking distance.
The Hounds proved too much, however, and even one-upped the Pumas during their most prolific stretch of the night. Across a five-minute span midway through the second half, Saint Joseph's went 4 of 5 from 3-point range, but came out on the other end trailing by more than when they started the run.
Three consecutive 3-pointers from the Hounds – one from Etherington and a pair from Davidson – helped the Greyhounds take a 70-57 lead near the 9-minute mark.
Down the stretch the Greyhounds clamped down on defense, holding the Pumas to just 2 for 12 during the final six-plus minutes.
UIndy finished with 20 points in transition as a team, and a sizeable 40-26 advantage in points score in the paint.
Maize filled up the stat sheet for the Hounds, finishing with 15 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks, a steal and an assist in only 23 minutes of action.
Barker contributed his 14 on a perfect shooting night, going 4 for 4 from the field and 6 for 6 from the foul line. He also had seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. His classmate, Loyd, tallied a game-high seven assists to go along with his 13 points and five boards.
Etherington and Davidson each led the Greyhounds with three 3-pointers apiece.
UIndy now awaits its draw in next week's GLVC Tournament. With a first round bye already locked up, the Greyhounds will be watching tomorrow night's Wisconsin-Parkside at Lewis game to determine whether they will be a No. 3 or No. 4 seed. Should the Flyers upset the 18th-ranked Rangers, the Greyhounds will be No. 3, while a Rangers win would equal the No. 4 seed.
"We have to look forward to the conference tournament and get guys healthy," Wright said. "We've got a few guys that are pretty banged up and some guys on the mend so we'll have a chance to get them some rest before we get back in the gym and get ready for the conference tournament."
Next for the Greyhounds will be the quarterfinals of the GLVC Tournament March 4 in St. Charles, Mo.
