HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. – The No. 3 UIndy softball team (4-0) opened the Music City Invitational with a 3-0 win versus NAIA Huntington University Friday afternoon. Senior
Morgan Foley fanned 13 in just 5 2/3 innings pitched to earn the win.
Â
In their season opener, the Foresters (0-1) managed just two hits off the Greyhounds' All-America pitcher. Foley garnered 11 Ks in the first 12 outs on the way to her third win in as many decisions. Senior
Miranda Tamayo relieved Foley in the sixth, finishing the shutout with 1 1/3 scoreless to earn her first save as a Hound.
Â
Junior
Natalie Lalich made the most noise offensively, cranking a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. It marked the third round-tripper for the Greenwood, Ind., native on the young season, making it three in just four games played.
Â
Making her first career start, sophomore infielder
Crystal Rains earned the day's first RBI with a perfectly-placed squeeze bunt in the third. With freshman
Emma Varsbergs on third base, Rains dropped a bunt down the third base line, not only plating Varsbergs but also beating the throw to first for an infield single.
Â
Senior
Erika Goodwin followed with a knock through the right side to score
Sammy Beckwith and give the Hounds the early cushion. Goodwin, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, is hitting .667 for the season with at least one hit in all four games.
