EMMANNUEL, Ga. – The first-year UIndy men's lacrosse team made another statement on the road Saturday, defeating Emmanuel College 16-6 to improve to 2-0 in their inaugural season.
The Greyhounds were led offensively by
Tyler Johnston's four goals and one assist, and
Parker Kump and
Scott LaPoe each finished with hat-tricks – the second in as many games for Kump. Â
Emmanuel (0-5) – a program which is in just its second year – held a brief 2-1 lead early in the first quarter. But the Hounds soon took control by reeling off four consecutive goals in less than four minutes.
UIndy later outscored the Lions 3-1 in the second quarter – two goals from Johnston and another by
Shawn Kimble – leading to a 9-4 halftime advantage.
Another 3-1 period in the third all but put the game out of reach, as the Hounds went ahead 12-5 on goals from Kump, Johnston and
Eric Lounds.
Emmanuel would net one more goal just minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Greyhounds finished with another 4-0 run to finish with a 16-6 double-digit victory.
UIndy out-shot its hosts 42-14, including a 25-11 advantage in shots on goal. The Hounds also came out ahead in the ground ball battle, 18-11.
Joseph Szymkowicz (9-11) and
Robert Berardi (7-13) combined to help the Greyhounds win two thirds of the game's face-offs. Berardi also paced the Hounds with five ground balls.
Jarod Kimble started in the cage for UIndy, finishing with five saves.
The Greyhounds return to action next Saturday, when they welcome Shorter to Key Stadium for the first home game in program history. It will also be the one and only lacrosse doubleheader this season, as the women's squad hosts McKendree at 12 p.m.
