HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – In a matchup of two first-year programs, the Greyhounds outlasted Alabama-Huntsville (4-1) 14-10, spoiling the Chargers program home opener.
Following consecutive blowouts in their first two games, UIndy (2-1) finally got the test head coach
Jillian Howley had been searching for. Opposing a team also in its infancy and riding a four-game winning streak, the Hounds were able to withstand an early deficit and string together six unanswered goals in the second half to put the game out of reach.
"This was really a great test for us," said Howley afterwards. "It was all about a full team effort from us today. From offense to defense and Irene (Carlquist) in goal, it was important for us to really earn a win today."
Freshman
Hannah Burczyk, who hadn't recorded a shot thus far in the season, scored five goals on eight shots and added an assist for a team-high six points. Junior
Chalane Morrison had another big game for the Hounds, netting four goals to add to her team-leading seven on the season.
Two quick goals from the Chargers put Hunstville on top 2-0 less than a minute into play. Sophomore
Anna Rulapaugh answered with her first of two goals to get the Hounds on the board, but an Elizabeth Brown goal extended the UAH lead to 3-1.
Three unanswered Greyhound goals from Morrison (1) and Burczyk (2) to close out the first half gave UIndy their first lead of the game at 4-3 heading into halftime. However, just as they did to start the first half, the Chargers scored two goals in the opening minute of the second half to retake a 5-4 lead.
"I thought we came out a little slow at the start of both halves," noted Howley. "For us to continue to fight after losing the lead at halftime was very encouraging to see. Obviously we'd like to start better, but it's certainly something we can build on."
Rulapaugh once again stopped the bleeding, tying the game at five with her second goal. The transfer from Pfeiffer University also added three assists for the second straight game.
Freshman
Abbey Antelo answered a UAH goal with her first of the season to tie things back up at 6-6, before the Chargers scored twice to push the lead to 8-6. However, it would be all Hounds from there.
Six straight Indianapolis goals gave the Hounds the lead for good, including three from Morrison and two from Burczyk. Freshman
Hana Priddy also found the back of the cage on a Free Position goal for her third goal of the season.
Freshman
Irene Carlquist had 14 saves on the day, and as a team the Greyhounds held the Chargers' leading point scorer, Nicole Federovitch, scoreless and without a shot. Federovitch entered Saturday with 20 goals and seven assists in four games.
"Defensively we did a great job on number 9 (Federovitch), their top scorer. We had Trisha (Koning) marking her all day and she played a great game."
Indianapolis will put their two-game win streak on the line next Saturday when they host McKendree at Key Stadium. It will be the first GLIAC conference game for the Hounds, and it will also be the first and only time both the women and men will be in action at home on the same day. The doubleheader begins at noon with the women's game, and the men will welcome Shorter at 3 p.m. for their home opener.
