INDIANAPOLIS – UIndy welcomed a familiar foe to Key Stadium Saturday afternoon, as the Hounds hosted McKendree in the teams' first meeting as members of the GLIAC. The Bearcats (2-1) scored six of the game's final eight goals to top the Hounds, 16-8, in the conference opener for both sides.
Indianapolis (2-2) came out strong in front of their home crowd, scoring the game's first two goals. Junior
Chalane Morrison put the Hounds on the board less than two minutes in with an unassisted goal, before feeding freshman
Erica Bushold five minutes later to extend the lead to 2-0.
It took McKendree nearly 11 minutes to break through the Greyhound defense and tally their first goal. Bree Suter netted the first of her four goals to draw within one, and Paige Salthouse tied the game at 2-2 with her first of four goals on the day.
Freshman
Hana Priddy's goal at the 11:52 mark of the first half gave the Hounds a 3-2 lead, but four unanswered goals from the Bearcats to close the opening frame would be all the momentum McKendree would need.
Despite surrendering a season-high 16 goals, freshman goalkeeper
Irene Carlquist did her job in keeping the Greyhounds afloat, turning away a career best 16 shots. The Woodbridge, Ill. native also improved mightily on clear attempts, turning the ball over just once Saturday compared to four turnovers in last weekend's win over Alabama-Huntsville.
Priddy and Morrison led the way for UIndy with three points apiece. The former recorded her first career hat trick, while Morrison tallied two goals and an assist.
Along with Salthouse and Suter, McKendree also received a four-goal effort from Hannah Sugarman. Amy Porta had eight saves in the cage for the Bearcats.
These two teams will meet again in the Greyhounds' next conference matchup, March 22 in Lebanon, Ill. Until then, the Hounds will be in Florida over their Spring Break for a pair of games against Florida Tech (Mar. 16, 7 p.m.) and Tampa (Mar. 18, 7:30 p.m.).
