MELBOURNE, Fla. – It was an unkind welcoming to the Sunshine State for UIndy (2-3), as they dropped the first of a two-game Florida trip to Florida Tech, 16-5.
Coming off a 7-9 record in their inaugural 2015 season, the Panthers (6-1) entered Wednesday winners of five of their first six, including their most recent win over No. 6 New Haven on Monday. The Panthers also had a previous win over Indiana (Pa.), a well-established program that gave No. 3 Lindenwood all they could handle in a 9-8 defeat.
The challenge the Greyhounds faced was eminent, and is started from the onset.
Florida Tech gained control of the game's first two draws, converting each of their possessions into goals. The Hounds would win the ensuing draw and sustain their first possession of the night, but a turnover would result in another Panther goal - a free position score from Sara Grenier.
The Panthers would tack on their fourth goal in the game's first six minutes on a free position goal by Sarah Kapinos.
Through 10 minutes of play, UIndy found themelseves down 8-0 in the shot column and 5-0 on the scoreboard.
Junior
Erika Mackenzie finally got the Hounds on the board with her fifth goal of the season at the 15:48 mark, but the Hounds go on to trail 11-1 before their next score.
Mackenzie would add a goal later in the first half, and freshman
Sydney Hauffman tallied a pair of goals as well. Sophomore
Chalane Morrison scored her team-leading 10th goal of the year with 6:46 remaining in the game.
The Panthers dominated possession throughout the night, winning 15 of 23 draws, including all eight in the second half.
Freshman
Irene Carlquist turned away eight of Florida Tech's 30 shots.
UIndy's road trip comes to a close on Friday when they travel west take on Tampa (1-7) at 7:30 p.m.
