TAMPA, Fla. - After making the trip westward from Melbourne, the Greyhound women's lacrosse team (2-4) wrapped up their Florida trip with a 9-7 loss to the University of Tampa (2-7).
A member of the Sunshine State Conference, Tampa is in the midst of its third year sponsoring women's lacrosse. The Spartans were nearly 15 goals per game leading into Friday's meeting where they limited UIndy to a season-low seven goals.
Sophomore
Anna Rulapaugh scored the game's first goal, giving the Hounds a 1-0 lead on a free position score three minutes in. Four unanswered goals from Tampa gave the Spartans a three-score lead before freshman
Sydney Hauffman tacked on her seventh goal of the year to make it 4-2.
Amanda Voges' third goal of the first 30 minutes came with six seconds till halftime, giving Tampa a 7-2 advantage at the break.
But the Hounds would refuse to go away without a fight. Freshman
Hana Priddy opened the second half with a pair of goals to cut the lead to three, before Paige Johnson answered with a score for Tampa.
Priddy's third goal at the 19:25 mark followed the seventh of the year for junior
Erika Mackenzie made it an 8-6 game, the closest UIndy had been since trailing 3-1.
Sophomore
Chalane Morrison would add another goal for UIndy, but key saves from Spartan goalie Caili Guilday down the stretch proved the difference.
Freshman goalie
Irene Carlquist had another solid game in the cage for the Hounds, saving nine of the 18 Tampa shots.
With the non-conference slate now in the books, the Hounds shift their attention to the GLIAC schedule. UIndy will travel to McKendree for a rematch against the Bearcats on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
