NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The third-ranked UIndy softball team capped the Music City Invitational with a 5-4 region win versus Ohio Dominican Sunday afternoon. Junior
Natalie Lalich smashed a pair of home runs in the winning effort, helping the Greyhounds (7-0) hold off the pesky Panthers (1-7) and remain unbeaten.
Â
Indiana's Miss Softball runner-up in 2012, Lalich hit a three-run bomb in the first inning and a two-run dinger in the third to stake the Hounds to an early 5-0 lead. It marked the first career two-homer game for the Greyhound right fielder. Lalich, who also had a single in later game, already has six long balls on the season and is slugging a lofty 1.348 through seven contests.
Â
Despite the early hole, Ohio Dominican clawed back with rallies in each of the final three innings, scoring two in the fifth, one in the sixth and one in the seventh. With one out and one already in in the seventh, the Panthers put the potential tying run at third base but pitcher
Morgan Foley (6-0) earned strikeout No. 10 then coaxed a game-ending groundout to earn the complete-game win.
Katie Kelly,
Emma Varsbergs and
Tayler Weck each added single offensively. Sophomore
Jessie Noone scored twice while
Erika Goodwin added a walk and a run.
Â
UIndy's seven victories in as many games mark the hottest start for the team since an 8-0 start to the 2011 campaign.
Â
The Greyhounds head to Florida to compete in the PFX Games. UIndy will play six contests in the Sunshine State, starting with match-up against Gannon Mar. 3 at 11 a.m. ET.
