INDIANAPOLIS – There was much to celebrate in UIndy's 98-66 victory over visiting Quincy Thursday night in Nicoson Hall, most notably senior
Jordan Loyd eclipsing the 1,000-point mark as a Greyhound.
With Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett looking on, the Greyhounds (16-4, 10-2 GLVC) as a team pieced together one of their best offensive performances of the season against the Hawks (14-7, 8-4), who began the night tied atop the GLVC West division.
UIndy shot 58 percent (35-59) from the floor, 9 of 20 from long range and poured in at least 98 points for the fourth time this year.
Loyd – the 39th-member of the 1k club – entered the night needing 18 points to reach the plateau. He wasted little time, using only 17 minutes to net the necessary amount. Watch the video linked above to hear Loyd's comments following his momentous game.
Not only was Loyd's early production significant for his personal milestone, but it helped UIndy pull away and turn a close contest into a runaway affair.
Following the opening tip, the two sides went back and forth, accounting for 10 lead swaps and three ties. Down 25-24 with eight minutes to go in the first period, UIndy tore off a remarkable 24-5 run that saw the Hounds' lead swell to 20. Over that stretch UIndy went 6 of 9, and made 10 of 12 from the foul line, all while holding the Hawks to 2-for-13 shooting with six turnovers.
Loyd had 10 of his 18 first-half points during that run, including a jumper with an even 3:00 on the clock, marking his 1,000th point in a Greyhound uniform.
UIndy took that momentum into the half, leading 47-29. The Hounds had 21 points off of 13 QU turnovers, and held the Hawks to 1 for 11 from long range after they started 2 for 2.
The Greyhounds did not let up in the second half, racking up 51 points while getting scoring contributions from nine different individuals.
When junior
Ernest Maize laid in a feed from senior
Lucas Barker at the 5:15 mark, UIndy held its largest lead of the night at 89-53.
Loyd led all scorers with 23 points, finishing 7 of 15 overall and a perfect 6 for 6 at the charity stripe. He added two steals, a block and an assist.
Barker notched his first double-double of the campaign, scoring 11 points to go along with a season-high 10 assists. Maize hauled in a season-best 14 rebounds, adding seven points and one block in 18 minutes.
True freshman
Jesse Kempson netted a career-high 14 points, knocking down all three of his 3-pointers while playing 17 minutes off the bench. Fellow classmate
Jimmy King finished with 11 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting effort.
Those two led a Greyhound bench that outscored their opponents' reserves 40 to 9.
UIndy returns to action this Saturday, welcoming the Truman Bulldogs to Nicoson Hall for a 3:15 p.m. tip.
