WESTFIELD, Ind. – The No. 2 UIndy Greyhounds set a school mark for best start to a season with a doubleheader sweep of Rockhurst Saturday. Winners of each of their first 15 games, the Greyhounds remained undefeated with wins of 7-2 and 2-1 versus the Hawks (7-13). The doubleheader was set to be the home opener for the Hounds, but field conditions prompted a move to Grand Park in nearby Westfield, Ind.
GAME 1After a scoreless opening three innings, the Greyhounds took control with a three-run fourth and blew it open with a four-run sixth. Both frames featured an RBI triple, first a two-run shot to the right-center gap by
Natalie Lalich, followed by a three-run gapper by
Erika Goodwin. Both hits marked a season-first triple for their respective hitters, while Lalich's three-bagger was good for a career first.
Â
Goodwin reached base all four times at the plate, adding a single and two walks to her triple. Freshman
Marisa Brown also walked twice, while junior
Katie Kelly worked a bases-loaded walk in the sixth, part of six free passes coaxed by the Hounds in the game.
Â
Starting pitcher
Morgan Foley tossed six innings of one-run ball to earn her 10th win in as many decisions. The senior from Louisville, Ky., gave up three hits – all infield singles – while striking out 12 and walking just two.
Fellow-senior
Coryn Tirpak came on in relief for just her second appearance of the year. She got the game's final three outs while surrendering a harmless unearned tally.
Â
GAME 2Runs were at a premium in game two, as the team's combined for just three runs and five hits. With the Hounds down 1-0 late and Rockhurst starter Bridgette Sappington working on a no-hitter, UIndy broke through with the eventually game-tying and game-winning runs in the sixth.
Â
With first base open and two down, the Hawks opted for the proverbial "unintentional-intentional" walk of Lalich, the Hounds' clean-up hitter. Senior
Jenny Thompson stepped to the dish and delivered a clutch two-run double, squirting the first pitch she saw down the right field line, just out of the first baseman's reach. Junior
Tayler Weck, who started the rally with a leadoff single, and Kelly hustled home to give the designated home team their first lead of the game.
Â
Stepping in the circle in relief in the fifth inning, Foley (11-0) sat the Hawks down in order in the seventh to seal the win.
Â
Senior pitcher
Miranda Tamayo got the start, allowing just one run and one walk in 4 1/3 innings. The lone Rockhurst tally broke a stretch of 23 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings for the California native.
Â
UIndy returns the Westfield and Grand Park Sunday for a doubleheader versus William Jewell starting at noon ET.
