WESTFIELD, Ind. – The UIndy softball team (17-0, 4-0 GLVC) kept it rolling with another doubleheader sweep Sunday, upping its win streak to 17. Ranked second in the latest Division II coaches poll, the undefeated Greyhounds topped William Jewell College (6-12, 0-4) by scores of 2-1 and 12-2 in a twin bill at Grand Park in Westfield, Ind.
Â
GAME 1For the second straight day, the Hounds earned a come-from-behind 2-1 win. Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth, senior
Jenny Thompson, whose two-run double was the game winner versus Rockhurst yesterday, crushed another clutch double to plate
Jessie Noone with the tying run.
Still tied in the sixth, senior
Erika Goodwin reach on a two-base error, was bunted over to third and hustled home on a wild pitch with what proved to be the deciding score.
Â
Senior pitcher
Morgan Foley (12-0) was once again dominant in the circle, fanning 14 batters against zero walks and six hits – all singles. Foley has surrendered just two extra-base hits and zero home runs in 71.0 innings this season.
Â
GAME 2The capper lacked the late drama of game one, as the Hounds hung a crooked number on the board in each of the first four innings.
Natalie Lalich and Thompson set the tone with back-to-back triples in the first frame to fuel a three-run rally.
Â
Five more tallies followed in the second to break it open. Each of the first five Greyhounds reached base in the inning, while junior
Katie Kelly and
Cassie Reed both had two-run singles.
Â
Tayler Weck scored three runs and drove in two – one on an RBI double in the fourth. Freshman
Emma Varsbergs had a pair of hits, including a single and an opposite-field triple.
Â
After weathering some early trouble, UIndy starter
Miranda Tamayo (5-0) settled down to get the win, tossing four innings while allowed two runs (one earned). Tamayo has garnered the win in each of her five decisions this year.
Â
Senior
Cherise Boyd came on in relief to get the final three outs in her first-ever pitching appear as a Hound. The Casey, Ill., native allowed a leadoff walk, but then enticed a line-out, 1-3 double play before striking out the game's final batter on four pitches.
Â
UIndy hits the road for two midweek doubleheaders during the upcoming Spring Break. The Hounds head to in-region Walsh Tuesday, Mar. 15, followed by two games at Slippery Rock Wednesday, Mar. 16.
