NORTH CANTON, Ohio – Highlighted by no-hitter by senior pitcher
Morgan Foley, the second-ranked UIndy softball team remained unbeaten with a non-conference sweep at Walsh University Tuesday. Foley no-hit the in-region Cavaliers in a 2-0 final in the opener, which preceded a 9-4 UIndy victory in game two.
The Greyhounds move to 19-0 on the season, extending its program-record season-opening win streak.
GAME 1Foley added another feather to her cap in an already impressive senior season. She racked up 15 strikeouts against zero walks, including striking out the side in the seventh and final frame.
Foley already has three no-hitters in her 11 starts this season, part of six career no-nos for the All-American.
UIndy plated all the runs they would need in the third inning. Making her first start as a Hound, junior-transfer
Theresa DeCosty led things off with an infield single and was sacrificed to second by junior
Tayler Weck. Junior
Katie Kelly followed with her first career home run, driving in what would ultimately be the game's only runs on a single swing.
Kelly,
Erika Goodwin and
Emma Varsbergs all finished with two hits, while DeCosty worked the game's only walk.
GAME 2In the capper, UIndy out-slugged its host with nine runs on 12 hits. The Cavaliers (7-12) jumped out to a lead 3-0 after one, but the Hounds answered with a six-spot the next half inning. Varsbergs started the rally with an infield single, and the inning unraveled from there.
Three walks and an error muddled up the bases before three straight RBI hits cleaned them up.
Jessie Noone, (one-run single),
Jenny Thompson (two-run single) and Varsbergs (one-run double) provided the polish, staking to the Hounds to a lead they would not relinquish.
Varsbergs kept on hitting, adding an RBI single in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth – her first home run as a collegian. The Downers Grove, Ill., native finished the game 4-for-4 with four ribbies and a pair of runs, part of a six-hit day.
DeCosty amassed two singles and two stolen bases, while Noone had two walks and scored twice.
