ROLLA, Mo. – The No. 2 UIndy softball team (21-0) put up back-to-back double-digit run totals at Missouri S&T Saturday, abusing the host Miners by scores of 10-0 and 11-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. The victories pushed the Greyhounds' record to 21-0 on the year, extending their season-opening school-record win streak.
Â
GAME 1 (5 innings)The Hounds jumped out to a 6-0 lead before a single Miner stepped to plate. Leadoff hitter
Katie Kelly opened the game (and ultimately the flood gates) with a single up the middle. From there, the Greyhounds earned three more hits and four walks while benefitting from three wild pitches on the way to six early tallies. The biggest blow of the rally came from DP
Brooke Riess, who delivered a two-run double to the right-center gap.
Â
A couple more extra-base hits accounted for the balance of the Hounds' runs. In the fourth, junior
Natalie Lalich sent her team-leading eighth home run over the center field fence, scoring herself and fellow-outfielder
Jessie Noone. Noone later plated
Tayler Weck and Kelly with a fifth-inning double.
Â
Starting pitcher
Morgan Foley (14-0) surrendered just one hit – a fourth-inning single – and fanned nine in four innings of work. Senior
Cherise Boyd continued her solid work in relief, tossing a scoreless fifth to close it out.
Â
At the plate, Kelly went 4-for-4 with four singles, Noone finished with a pair of doubles and two runs scored and Riess collected two hits.
Â
GAME 2Though runs were slower coming in the capper, they once again came in bunches for the Hounds. Holding on to a slim 2-0 lead through five innings, home runs by
Jenny Thompson and Riess in the sixth provided more than enough cushion. Both were two-run shots, with Riess' good for her first career jack.
Â
The hits kept coming for the Hounds, as Noone smacked a two-run bomb and
Cassie Reed a three-run shot in seventh inning.
Â
Foley (15-0) again got the start in game two, earning her second win of the day with 12 strikeouts in six shutout innings. The Louisville, Ky., native allowed just one hit for the second straight start and now has thrown 21 2/3 consecutive scoreless frames.
Â
Reed scored three runs and drove in three, while Thompson added an RBI double to her home run.
Â
The Hounds head to Springfield, Mo., Sunday for a doubleheader at Drury University starting at 1 p.m. ET.
