SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The second-ranked UIndy softball team extended its season-opening win streak to 23 Sunday, sweeping a doubleheader at Drury University in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The wins came on both sides of the spectrum, as the Greyhounds cruised to a 13-0 victory in game one before pulling out a 2-1 extra-inning win in the capper.
Â
Pitcher
Morgan Foley got the "W" in both games, striking out a combined 34 batters in 13 1/3 innings of work.
Â
GAME 1Drury would muster just two hits and two walks in the opening game, as Foley (16-0) dominated the Panther hitters. The first 18 outs came via the strikeout before a fielder's choice in the seventh denied Foley the chance to tie her own NCAA DII record of 21 strikeouts in seven innings.
Â
Foley pitched 6 1/3 innings before fellow-senior
Miranda Tamayo came on in the seventh to get the final two outs.
Â
Meanwhile, UIndy built a modest 3-0 lead through six innings before exploding for 10 runs in the seventh. All nine Greyhound batters recorded a hit in the frame, including the first career grand slam for junior
Tayler Weck.
Erika Goodwin also homered in the frame, while
Natalie Lalich and
Emma Varsbergs each contributed two RBIs to the rally.
The hit parade generated 10 scores in all, UIndy's most runs in a single inning since the 2015 opening – a span of 85 games.
Â
Goodwin added an RBI triple earlier in the game on the way to three runs and three RBIs. Senior catcher
Jenny Thompson hit a solo homer in the fourth, while
Katie Kelly scored three times.
Â
GAME 2After Kelly led off the game with her second homer of the season, the Greyhounds would have to wait until extra innings to score again. Tied 1-1 heading into the 10th, a Weck single set the table for Goodwin, who delivered a clutch two-out triple to score plate what proved to be the game winner.
Â
Foley made sure it stuck by striking out the side in the bottom half of he 10th, keeping the Greyhounds' spotless record intact.
Â
After Tamayo started the game, Foley (17-0) tossed the final seven innings to pick up the win. Foley fanned 16, walked zero and allowed just one hit.
Â
UIndy ventures out of conference play this week for a pair of in-region contests at Ohio Dominican Wednesday, Mar. 23 starting at 3 p.m. ET.
