COLUMBUS, Ohio – The second-ranked UIndy softball team ventured outside of conference play Wednesday, keeping its perfect record intact with a pair of region wins at Ohio Dominican (13-13). With final scores of 9-3 and 6-1, the Greyhounds moved to 25-0 on the season while snapping the Panthers' six-game winning streak.
Â
The two opponents met earlier in the year, with UIndy pulling out a 5-4 win at the Music City Invitational Feb. 28. Wednesday was a different story, however, as the Hounds cruised to easy victories in both games. In addition, senior pitcher
Morgan Foley went the distance in game two to notch her 89th career complete game, tying former-teammate Jennifer DeMotte for first in the UIndy all-time annals.
Â
GAME 1A six-run third inning from UIndy all but put the game out of reach. The Greyhounds did their damage on three hits and two Panther errors, including a three-run bomb by
Brooke Riess and RBI singles from
Natalie Lalich and
Jenny Thompson.
Â
UIndy tacked on three more in the top of the sixth, as
Jessie Noone and
Emma Varsbergs each had a single to account for the only hits in the frame.
Â
Foley (18-0) struck out 12 and walked none in five scoreless innings, giving up just a fourth-inning single for her only base runner allowed.
Â
Needing just three outs to end the game on the run rule, senior
Miranda Tamayo relieved Foley in the top of the sixth but only got one out before the Panthers chased her with three hits and a walk.
Â
Fellow-senior
Coryn Tirpak stepped into the circle to finish the job, pitching the final 1 2/3 innings and striking out three.
Â
GAME 2Foley got the start again in game two, tossing six innings of one-run ball in a game that was called early due to darkness. The Louisville, Ky., native fanned eight more Panthers in the night cap, walking two and allowing three hits. Ohio Dominican's fifth-inning tally snapped a string of 44 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings for the Greyhound ace.
Â
Offensively, the Hounds scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth. The latter frame featured home runs from Varsbergs and Riess.
Â
A product of Oswego, Ill., Riess finished a career day at the plate by coming a triple shy of the cycle in game two. The UIndy DP drove in four more runs in the capper to collect eight ribbies on the day.
Â
Junior
Katie Kelly added two singles and a run in game two, while Varsbergs scored twice and pinch runner
Theresa DeCosty stole a base.
Â
UIndy returns to GLVC play by hosting Lewis and Wisconsin-Parkside Friday and Saturday, respectively.
