INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of its home fans for the first time this season, the No 2 UIndy softball team (27-0, 10-0 GLVC) powered past the visiting Lewis Flyers (13-16, 2-8) Friday afternoon, sweeping the doubleheader at Baumgartner Field by scores of 5-0 and 10-2. The Greyhounds hit six home runs on the day, including two each from sophomore
Brooke Riess and junior senior
Jenny Thompson.
Â
GAME 1The Hounds scored in each of the first three innings, all via the long ball. Leadoff hitter
Katie Kelly kicked things off with a solo jack in the bottom of the first inning, her second leadoff homer in as many conference games. Riess followed with a two-run bomb in the second, while junior
Natalie Lalich added a solo shot in the third.
Â
That was more than enough support for pitcher
Morgan Foley (20-0). The Greyhound ace was her normal dominant self, allowing just two hits and zero runs while striking out 13 in six-plus innings. Fellow-senior pitcher
Coryn Tirpak finished the game by getting the final three outs to complete the shutout.
Â
Riess also recorded a single and a walk to finish 2-for-2 with two runs and two ribbies. Kelly added a double and a walk to her line, while
Erika Goodwin walked twice and singled.
Â
GAME 2The power surge continued in game two, starting with a seven-run explosion in the first inning. Thompson and Riess both went yard, combining for five RBIs in the frame.
Emma Varsbergs added fuel to the fire with a double, while Lalich and Kelly each had an RBI single in the inning.
Â
Thompson wasn't done with her fireworks display, adding a three-run bomb in the second inning. The Greencastle, Ind., native finished the game 2-for-3 with a pair of runs and five driven in.
Â
Riess, meanwhile, added a single in the second inning to finish the day with four hits and a walk in five plate appearances. The Oswego, Ill., product has now homered in four consecutive games, and overall has five homers in just 31 at bats since cracking the everyday lineup.
Â
Senior
Miranda Tamayo (7-0) got the win in the circle, notching her fifth complete game of the season. She fanned two and walked three while surrendering two runs (one earned) in five innings.
UIndy remains at home to face Wisconsin-Parkside for two games Saturday, Mar. 26 at noon ET.
