INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy softball team continued its run through the Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule, earning a pair of shutouts against visiting Wisconsin-Parkside Saturday. Pitchers
Morgan Foley and
Coryn Tirpak combined for 14 scoreless innings on the day, with starter Foley earning the winning decision in both contests.
Â
The victories moved the Hounds to 29-0 on the season and 12-0 in GLVC play. They are ranked No. 2 in the latest NFCA coaches poll and are the only undefeated team remaining in Division II.
Â
GAME 1Less a walk in the first, Foley (21-0) punched out every batter through 3 1/3 innings on the way to 12 strikeouts on the game. The first and only Ranger hit of the game came on a single in the fifth. Tirpak came on in the sixth to toss two perfect frames.
Â
UIndy got on the board in the second on a two-run single by junior
Tayler Weck. After
Cassie Reed reached on an error,
Brooke Riess smoked a double to the right-center gap, putting two Hounds in scoring position ahead of Weck's base knock.
Â
UIndy hung four more in the fifth and sixth combined to pull away. Senior catcher
Jenny Thompson accounted for all four RBIs, with three coming on her third home run of the weekend. She now has five dingers on the year, matching Riess for second on the team.
Â
Thompson,
Katie Kelly and
Jessie Noone each had two hits, while
Natalie Lalich added a double and two runs scored.
Â
GAME 2Game two followed a very similar formula, with Foley and Tirpak pitching five innings and two innings, respectively, to again hold the Rangers (3-25, 0-12) scoreless. Parkside managed just two hits off of both Greyhound hurlers (all singles), with Foley (22-0) fanning nine to pick up the win.
Â
Offensively, the Hounds did most of their damage in the fourth, plating three unearned tallies against UWP starter Amber Ramos (0-5). Reed and Weck both worked a walk in the frame, while
Erika Goodwin later delivered a two-run double.
Â
Goodwin also had a two-bagger in the first inning and also added a stolen base. Lalich had a pair of RBI singles, scoring Weck in the third and Goodwin in the sixth.
Â
The Hounds travel up I-65 for a twin bill at in-state Saint Joseph's Tuesday, Mar. 29 at 4 p.m. ET.
