Softball moves to 31-0 with sweep at St. Joe’s

RENSSELAER, Ind. – The No. 2 UIndy softball team (31-0, 14-0 GLVC) kept its record spotless with a pair of midweek wins Tuesday, defeating Saint Joseph's (10-23, 7-7) by scores of 4-2 and 8-0. Senior Morgan Foley pitched all 11 innings in the game-one thriller, while senior Miranda Tamayo tossed a complete-game shutout in the five-inning capper.

GAME 1
UIndy picked up the "W" in dramatic fashion. Tied 2-2 after regulation, the in-state rivals battled for three scoreless extra innings before the Hounds finally broke through in the 11th. Back-to-back singles from Natalie Lalich and Jenny Thompson started the rally, while freshman Emma Varsbergs finish it with a double down the left field line that scored pinch runner Taylor Podschweit and Thompson with the go-ahead runs.

Foley sat the Pumas down in order in the bottom half to seal the win. The Louisville., Ind., native finished with 17 Ks in 11 innings to up her pitching record to 23-0. In the process, the Greyhound ace notched her 90th career complete game to become the program's all-time leader in the category.

Earlier in the game, Foley allowed her first home run of the season when Puma right fielder Jordan Schneider tied it at 2-2 with a two-run shot in the fifth. St. Joseph's threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases and putting the potential winning run at third base with two down, but Foley slammed the door, inducing a harmless come-backer to end the threat.

UIndy's initial tallies came on a Jessie Noone single in the first inning and a Katie Kelly RBI single in the fifth. Tayler Weck scored on the latter hit after recording her first career triple.

GAME 2
Game two did not offer the suspense of its predecessor. The Greyhounds jumped out a four-run advantage in the very first inning and did not look back. Five hits and a walk contributed to the early lead, as Lalich and Thompson each delivered an RBI double in the frame.

Tamayo stepped into the circle in the bottom of the first, and after the Pumas loaded the bases with one out, the Huntington Beach, Calif., product retired the side and allowed just one single and one walk the rest of the way to earn the win and move to 8-0 on the year.

The UIndy offense tacked on four more runs in the second and third innings combined. A successful squeeze bunt from Noone and Weck's second triple of the day plated three of the four tallies.

This weekend brings a rare split schedule for the Hounds, with a doubleheader coming both on the road and at home. UIndy travels to Southern Indiana Saturday for a 1 p.m. ET first pitch before returning home to host Bellarmine Sunday at 12 p.m. ET.
