WESTFIELD, Ind. – Four Greyhounds pitchers combined to allow just seven hits and no runs on Sunday as UIndy closed out the inaugural Midwest Region Crossover Baseball Showcase with a 2-0 victory over Tiffin University.
Â
Michael Schalasky (1-1) scattered three hits, walked three and struck out a pair in five-plus innings of work to earn his first collegiate win.
Adam Cornwell and
Nick Lonergan gave up two hits over the next three innings before
Dylan Stutsman worked a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the year.
Â
The win gave UIndy a 2-2 record on the weekend and moves the Hounds to 13-5 on the year. Tiffin dropped to 6-9 with the loss.
Â
The Dragons wasted no time threatening the Hounds, getting a single and a pair of walks to load the bases with one out in the inning. But Schalasky dug in on the mound and recorded his only two strikeouts of the day to leave the bags full and end the threat.
Â
Tiffin threatened again in the top of the third, putting runners on second and third with one out and the heart of the order coming up. Once again, the freshman hurler found his way out of trouble, forcing a run-saving fielder's choice and a fly out to keep the game scoreless.
Â
The Greyhound offense managed a hit in each of their first three trips to the plate, but couldn't find a way to bring a run home until the bottom of the fourth.
Colin Hawk led off with a single and
Kyle Orloff drew a walk to start things off. Both runners advanced on a
Storm Joop sac bunt, bringing
Joe Trennepohl to the dish with one down.
Â
Trennepohl laid down a perfect squeeze bunt that brought Hawk in and later Orloff after Tiffin pitcher Kyle Montell slipped and let an errant throw to first base go, spotting the Greyhounds the only two runs of the game.
Â
Needing a rally to get back to even, the Dragons put two runners on to lead off the sixth, chasing Schalasky from the game in favor of Cornwell and the senior pitcher retired the first three hitters he faced to keep the Dragons off the board.
Â
That proved to be the last threat of the day for Tiffin as Cornwell worked a spotless seventh before turning it over to Lonergan in the eighth and Stutsman in the ninth. Stutsman struck out a pair and needed just seven pitches to close out the win.
Â
Trennepohl and Hawk had two hits each to lead the Greyhounds, who managed just six on the day against Tiffin pitching. Montell (1-1) took the loss for Tiffin, giving up one earned run on four hits with two walks and three strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings of work.
Â
UIndy opens up GLVC East Division play next weekend when St. Joseph's comes to Greyhound Park for four games, starting with a double-header on Friday, Mar. 25. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
