ALLENDALE, Mich. – It was the first look of the conference's best for the UIndy women's lacrosse team as they traveled to Grand Valley State to take on the three-time defending GLIAC champions. It was all Lakers (4-3, 2-0) Saturday, as the nation's eighth ranked team defeated the visiting Hounds (2-6, 0-3 GLIAC), 15-4.
Grand Valley certainly isn't the average 4-3 team. The Lakers played their first five games all against ranked opponents, including meetings with No. 1 Adelphi (L, 16-6), No. 2 Le Moyne College (L, 14-11), No. 3 Lindenwood (L, 11-7), and No. 5 Florida Southern (W, 10-7).
A perennial powerhouse in Michigan, Grand Valley has won the both the regular season and conference championships since the GLIAC began sponsoring the sport in 2013. The Lakers have also never lost to a GLIAC opponent.
As has been the case in many of the team's losses, UIndy dug themselves an insurmountable hole early. Four different Lakers scored the game's first four goals, and Erika Nuemen added her second of three goals to extend the lead to 5-0.
Freshman
Erica Bushold finally got the Hounds on the board at the 12:24 mark, but Grand Valley would answer with eight straight goals to seal it.
It was an early and often onslaught from the Lakers, peppering a total of 40 shots as a team. They were also nearly perfect on clear attempts, finishing 18-19 on the day, compared to an 11-23 clip for UIndy.
Bushold would add a second goal after halftime, marking the sixth different Hound to lead the team in scoring.
Chalane Morrison scored her team-leading 13th of the season, while
Hana Priddy netted her 11th, good for second on the team.
Anna Rulapaugh and
Erika Mackenzie each added an assist.
Up next is a homecoming of sorts for head coach
Jillian Howley as the team will travel to Painesville, Ohio for a meeting with Lake Erie (3-3, 1-2 GLIAC) on Friday. Before being named the Greyhound program's first head coach, Howley headed Lake Erie for three seasons (2012-14) compiling a 30-23 record.
