PAINESVILLE, Ohio – For three years,
Jillian Howley roamed the sidelines of Jack Britt Stadium as the head coach of the Lake Erie Storm. Friday, she returned to Britt, this time leading the visiting Greyhounds against her former squad. It was a warm welcome for Howley as UIndy (3-6, 1-3 GLIAC) picked up its first conference victory in program history with a 16-6 win over the Storm (3-5, 1-3 GLIAC).
The 16 goals were the most Indianapolis had scored in a game since a 17-2 win over Urbana back on February 20 and helped snap the team's five game losing streak.
Unlike recently, it was the Greyhounds that got off to a quick start, Friday. UIndy scored four of the game's first five goals and led 7-2 at the break.
Chalane Morrison and
Anna Rulapaugh each tallied two of their game-high five goals in the first half, while
Hannah Burczyk also added a pair in the first half and
Erica Bushold scored the game's first goal.
Lake Erie would claw back to within 9-6 with eight minutes remaining, but the offensive dominance of Morrison and Rulapaugh would carry the Hounds from there.
UIndy scored seven goals in the final eight minutes, three apiece from the team's top scorers.
Sydney Hauffman would tack on a goal of her own.
Indianapolis outshot the Storm 26-15 and forced Lake Erie into just eight shots on goal. The Hounds also converted on 16-18 (.889) clear attempts, their best mark of the season.
After picking up their first conference win in program history, the Hounds will try to make it two in a row on Sunday when they travel to Canton, Ohio for an early 10 a.m. date with Walsh (3-4, 0-4). The Cavaliers were the lone team to be picked below UIndy in the preseason GLIAC polls and dropped their game Friday night to McKendree, 23-2
